Meteotemplate - new free website template

Interesting that the a.png works for you Niko, it doesn’t work in any of my browsers. One thing that does work though, is the moon. That appears to be the only image that will display. A browse through the permissions of the moon image files show that they have the same permissions as the other images. I’m going to upload the images again, just in case something went wrong during the initial load last night.

Jachym, please feel free to list my site in your list - although I imagine you may want to wait until I have it working

The page stretches automatically to fit your monitor height, please send me link to the page where this is happening and I will look at it.

Maybe a little add on...in the Info/DataBase tabs

if you could add the time of last data registered like…

Time of last entry or
Time of last DB update

it would just be a short cut to verify

also,if something happend like an alarm on the main index.php that would indicate that the DB hasnt been updated for X period of time…like…

WARNING the database is outdated…last update at xx:xx (based on the timezone of the user)

Yes, I will add a text with the last update in the admin panel and I am also planning on a relatively sophisticated plug in, where you as admin will have the possibility to set up email notifications for various events such as not only station not reporting, but also sending daily summaries to email etc.

That surely is strange, try re-uploading the images. And I will put your site on the list, it doesnt matter it is not yet 100% working, everyone is working on their website and making it better and better

Fresh copy of the template downloaded onto a laptop (not the pc used to set the site up last night) using different ftp client, uploaded the entire ‘icons’ directory again. Still no change unfortunately.

Has me pretty baffled really. I can view pictures from other directories apart from the icons one - the moon, language flags etc.

What is even stranger is that unlike Niko, I dont get the 403 error, instead I get the normal 404, see screen attached…

Likewise, all mine show 404 for the individual images.

edit: just to prove me wrong, I tried loading some images individually, and got 403 errors as well. I’m wondering if it is something to do with the host I am using.

Might be time to stretch my learning curve significantly further and see if I can’t get the Raspberry Pi that does the weather uploading to host the webserver too.

Hm… unfortunately this obviously has nothing to do with the scripts themselves and none of the users has ever reported similar problems.

The only help I can offer is, if you want you could temporarily change your password and thus grant me access to your FTP, I could have a look at it, check the privilages, check the files and try to find the problem. And then of course you would change your password again, I promise I wont do anything to your site, but it is entirely up to you what you want to do, it is just an offer  because otherwise I really cant help you on this one.

OK I checked your FTP… this is just so strange, all the files have the right permissions (-rwxr-xr-x), they have the same owner. The files are all physically on the server because I tried downloading them using FTP and it worked. But they just dont show up on your web. And what it even stranger is that the moon images, which have the EXACT same settings in terms of permissions, group etc. work normally… this seriously is a mystery, Im not an expert on servers, but would anybody have any ideas? Also I didnt find any .htaccess file that would for some reason block your folders and I also checked the images in the SteelSeries folder and those dont work either when opened from the browser.

So I found what could be the problem, when I further inspected the error logs, I noticed some of the images are interpreted as text. I searched it on the web and found some threads about this and the suggested solution was:

This warning is telling you that your web server isn't configured to send the correct MIME type meta data for PNG images. You should probably consult the administrator for your web server and ask them to set the correct MIME mapping

“This website is hosted for free by www.AwardSpace.com” - not a good sign IME :frowning:

Yes you are right Niko, and I mean… what can you expect from a free hosting

Something very strange with that server, this morning a.png is 403 for me, a.gif is OK in IE11 but 403 in Chrome

Yes indeed and he gave me access to his FTP, I checked it and every single image has the same permissions and yet some are displayed, some show 403 and others 404  And when I tried downloading the files from the server using FTP client, they did download correctly, so the files are physically there.

So, that answers that question then. It would be great if this sort of information was made a little more public in their help files but as Niko pointed out, it is a free service.

I’m away with work for the next few days so I will look into changing when I get back.

Suffice to say I can’t thank Jachym enough for his patience and help while I have been attempting to work this problem.

And for anyone else considering awardspace - you get what you pay for!

Thanks for the update George, so no need to try looking further into what could be the problem with the template

I recommend you give a try to 1and1 once you are back. Its now just 1 dollar a month and has unlimited webspace, MySQL support, CRON jobs etc. And one year is plenty of time to decide whether you want to prolong the service or not. We already tried it with one of my friends, he is now using it and so far absolutely no problems and 100% uptime. I think the promotion is time-limited so it would be worth not postponing it too much though.

Either way, I think that it will then be quite easy for you to get it working, since you can export your MySQL as SQL file and just import it back to wherever you will have your new hosting and it should then all work

hello…

Ok…so I guess the one that produces the forecast on my meteotemplate homepage is from Aeris…so I signed up for the free membership and all I can find is this…

You’ll need an active Aeris API subscription and your application registered with the API in order to receive the required access ID and secret key. For more details about using our API, review our Getting Started information. Also review our API endpoints for a complete look at the types of weather data and options we offer with your subscription.

my registration is ACTIVE but what do they mean by APPLICATION REGISTERED? What application? Totally lost on this site and need some good guidance/step by step on exactly how to get this key and secret code so my forecast works.

The other site… World weather online is also very confusing to navigate and I have not yet found an Key for them either.

someone please show me the way…starting with Aeris first, or I can send you my aeris login details via PM and you can PM my Api Key and secret code.

I have navigated a lot of sites in my lifetime but trying to find these api keys after registering on both sites sure is a challenge that shouldn’t be so hard to do.

Thanks…Chris

Hi Chris, no problem
as I said I will try to change this in the future to Yahoo, which does not require registration. The only problem I had with yahoo is that they provide far less info so that is why I used WWO etc.

I could try to make a step by step tutorial for you, but it would take some time, so if you are willing to share your usernames and pass, that would make things a lot easier. Just PM me or email me at [email protected] and I will send you all you need

hi again…

I think I have aeris figured out but have some questions about it…

to get the api key and secret code I have to “add new application” …and then it asks me to fill in these:

application name
application namespace
organization
website

so what do I enter into these boxes?..I am pretty sure the last one is the URL to my Meteotemplate homepage, so I entered http://www.gateway2capecod.com/meteotemplate. what do I enter in the first 3 boxes though? just not sure.

also curious by them having just this info and then giving me a api key and secret code, and also when I registered it never ask for my location…Then how do they know exactly where I am located and can give me the correct forecast for my location, if I never gave them my location??

Thanks…Chris

in your aeris account, clik on the aeris sign up button then fill up what they ask…you will then receive your keys

I signed up and did get a few emails, but none had key and code…so I then figured that I needed to go to my account and then click on “Add new Application”…and it asked for name… namespace… organization. website …after filling in these things, and clicking on save it then gave me key and code. just not sure I entered correct info into the first three things it asked for name/namespace/organization

Hi Chris,

your Aeris seems to be working fine and I just sent you WWO key to use, I hope it helps, let me know if there is any problem.
