VP2

 Just finished a temporary install of my new VP2 that arrived tonight! I will tackle hooking it up to a second PC
in the AM for a week or so before I put it online! Anything I need to know before I do this I haven’t opened the serial
data logger yet! Is there something that holds the little screen in the rain gauge or does it just sit there?

It just sits in there. I lost mine a while back

Chuck

Thanks Chuck I thought I was doing something wrong didn’t snap in or anything just sits there! :frowning:

To be exact it usually just sits there until a bird steals it

From previous threads…the screen just sits there until a bird finds it usefull.

Lot of us have switched to the kitchen strainer solution.
A dremel and a little time and it can be modified.

what about a drop of super glue on the original one?

Super glue might eat the plastic…a dab of rtv silicone might work.
You’ll most likely want to remove it at some point to clean the drain port.

Don’t use anything that you can’t remove, a dab of silicon would be OK.

I use a strainer like looney2ns, mine is sink drainer so no handle and no dremel work needed.

Yea silicone may be the ticket! Anything I need to know when installing the data logger not even sure yet where it goes!!

make sure you power off the console first
lift the battery compartment to find the slot where it goes, at the back

I’m still reading the manual but I wll find out how to power it off before I start!
Thanks Brian!

a piece of nylon string tied to the screen and then fastened to one of the mounting screwws will keep a bird from stealing it. And still allow removal for cleaning.

Good idea!!
Thanks!

Fishing line. Or if you want a little fun, elastic

I use the kitchen strainer method BUT if you should use that method be aware that small pieces of whatever is blowing around will still clog up the drain hole. It had been raining off and on for a couple of days and I was getting no indication of rain on my VP2. I got a ladder and climbed up to where I could see inside the rain bucket and the water was about to start running over the top. Took a toothpick and cleaned the hole out…you should have heard the tipper…plop, plop, plop  Really ran up my rain rate!

I just opened the data logger what is the wire with the phone plug on one end and the red cap on the other for? #-o

LOOP back tester (to find what com port is in use)
not normaly needed, do not worry about it

I setup my wireless VP2 this week and it was actually easier than I thought it was going to be.
I had to wait a few days for the wind to drop below 20mph so I could get up onto the roof to mount the anemometer on a new 8’ mast on the chimney and I’ve used a 6 foot long 4" x 4" fence post, concreted into the ground, to hold the ISS. The hardest part was joining the anemometer to the ISS, as I couldn’t afford the wireless remote for the anemometer I had to run the cable (with an extention) to the ISS which meant trenching the cable into the ground as it crossed the field to stop the sheep from getting at it!!

Make sure you read through both manuals before you decide on the location of the ISS and check the signal strength before you fix the ISS in position. You want page 39 in the console manual and it’s screen 2, fig 4 on the diagram for the signal strength. It says it should be between 20 & 60, mine’s reading 40 and that’s through one internal wall, a solid concrete gable end and about 150 feet across a field, so not bad.

Swapping WD over was just a case of changing the station type in the setup and making sure I took out any offset’s that were in there for the old station. Also remember to switch the datalogger ON, it will be OFF when first installed.

Overall I’m over the moon with the setup, it’s giving me much more accurate data than the old WS2300. You’ll notice the difference in faster updates coming from the anemometer and it now registers showers, not the longer spells of rain that it needed for the WS2300.
I like the 10 minute average ticker when the wind is over 20 knots, it comes up with ā€œHOLD ON TO YOUR HATā€.

Have fun with it, you’ll be glad you got a VP2.

Thanks guys I fugured the loop back out didn’t need it I have the VP2 up and running now no problems so far
can I set up another weather display folder for my old station I have on another com port?? I would like to compare the 2 for a bit if this is possible!
