no, not related (was just for the install error only)
I do not know why you have there ftp error problems
I do not have any other reports of this particular problem
must be something on your pc I would think that is causing some sort of conflict
when you get a un closed ftp program, double click on the icon in the system tray and see what shows in the ftp program (scroll down to the end)
(past that info here)
also try not running a screen saver or try not locking your pc while away (i.e does the problem happen when you are using the pc)
and make sure your windows power settings are not set to put the hard drive to sleep (or anything else to sleep)
also if using vista or W7 make sure to run WeatherD.exe as administrator
when you get the Ftp program not closing
click on the Ftpupd.exe icon
either in the system tray or in the Task bar
to make that program visible
then scroll down to the end of the data shown and post here what shows there
also you did not say you were using wdstartwatch.exe
I’m not sure I’ve found the Ftpupd.exe icon either in the system tray or in the Task bar or anywhere else. Is that the icon that has two lines of text, “WD” over “FTP”? I have found that icon with Windows Explorer in C:>wdisplay just below the Text Document ftplogfull. But when I left or right click on ti I don’t see a program. Left click gets nothing; right click opens a small window with one selection “Open”, but clicking that does nothing. So I can’t post anything. Where else can I look?
I wasn’t intending to use wdstartwatch.exe as I’m not certain what it does. All I can find that might be it is a line in Setup>Extra/Misc/Custom Screen Settings>Program called “Run WDwatch.exe [checks for crashes of WD]”. I have unticked that box. Is that correct?
I don’t see any icon on the desktop or on the pages of WD that seem to be associated with an FTP program. I have mouse-overed all of them and none of them use the letters “FTP”. What does the icon look like?
It would be in the system tray if running and would be yellow with red lettering. It will only be there when it’s uploading something so you have to catch it then.
if you have stuck Ftp programs, then you should have alot of the FTP icons
try clicking on one of them to see what shows (at the end of the scroll of information)
Here’s the FTP situation right now, 0930 Sunday.
According to Task Manager>Processes, in the Image Name column, there are 238 instances of ftpupd.exe.
In Task Manager>Applications only WD is running.
In the lower right of the screen (taskbar) I have: Unplug Hardware, Volume, LAN connected, Lan 2 disconnected, Synaptics TouchPad, WD, CPU use bar graph, clock.
In the lower left of the screen I have: Start, Show Desktop, IE, W Media Player, WD start, Firefox start.
In the lower center I have large rectangles: WD, Task Manager
At bottom of Task Manager: Mem Usage: 1778540K/1781668K
Nowhere on the screen do I see any icon featuring yellow with red lettering.
Now it is 0955. I have rebooted and WD has self started. According to Task Manager only WD is running and in Processes there are 0 instances of ftpupd.exe shown.
I have been staring at the icons and sure enough that icon that has two lines of red text, “WD” over “FTP” with no background color appears between the CPU bar graph and the clock about once each 5 min for about .25 - .5 seconds.
I’ve got to where I can push the button during the appearance of the icon. That causes a window to open. but the window automatically closes almost immediately. No WD-FTP icons stay on screen for more than a fraction of a second. I’ve been trying various button pushes but so far haven’t found anything that holds that window to stay open. Ggrrrrr.
But at least its progress.
Does anyone know how to make the WD-FTP screen stay “on”?
The laptop came with only 256 of RAM which you thought might have been the issue so I bought 512 more a couple weeks ago. It works just the same; just takes a bit longer to jam up.
From “MS System Information”:
When WDFTP is jammed: Total RAM 777,712 KB Available RAM 4,556 KB
When just rebooted: Total RAM 777,712 KB Available RAM 590,940 KB
Of course that seems odd itself (to almost computer illiterate me) as I don’t see how errant FTP bursts would take up 580,000 KB in the short time between the start of FTPUPD.EXE’s appearing in Task Manager>Processes and FTP functions jamming.
I notice that when I went to reboot just now the WD current weather icon in the tray was gone and a red alarm clock was in its place. If I mouse overed the current weather appeared. Also, although WD was running (as shown by the data received light blinking green) Task Manager showed no applications running!? After reboot it shows it running normally.
I notice that when I went to reboot just now the WD current weather icon in the tray was gone and a red alarm clock was in its place
its not gone
its just showing you that there is an alarm in place (ie all time record)
i,e the icon for WD has changed to an alarm clock (until you acknowledge that alarm (by viewing WD))
when the pc is not in use, make sure the screen is not locked and try disabling any screen saver
i.e when the PC is in use, does this problem occur?
aslo try monitoring the memory use of different programs on the pc with task manager over time
The pc is pretty much in use all the time by WD. Only while I’m rebooting (several times each day) is WD not running, collecting the data from the Peet station and graphing and logging it.
However this pc is dedicated to WD use; no apps are run other than WD and Task Manager. Of course there are probably some small routines running in the background.
There are no screen savers on and the pc is not locked.
Brian - I was doing some testing on this as I am trying to get testtags.php to upload using the new check box, however I found that when I went to Web Files Upload and selected “Upload Now” everything would upload fine (minus testtags) however ftpupd.exe would stay in the system tray (hovering over it showed 100% weatherbanner.gif - the last file to be uploaded). The log said all done and closing the program however it never closed. Click upload now again and same thing but two ftpupd’s running, do it again and 3 running.
It seems like the shutdown process isnt completing as you cannot bring up the ftpupd window, its just a runaway process until killed.
If I do the upload at the scheduled times it works fine and ftpupd goes away after completing.
The full log when I do “Upload Now”? no problem on that just have to do an upload now. 5 minute scheduled upload works perfectly for me by the way
Right, didnt get the log as it is not written on the Upload Now but open the ftpupd window while it was uploading and got it caught there. After it uploads the last file weatherbanner.gif it scrolls with “there are 1 more things to do” many times and then stops responding. Thats where it gets stuck. I have a screenshot for you when I can work out how to upload images to the forum
Oh and while this ftpupd instance is hung the scheduled one works fine too
