There are ways of doing it if you get a lower spec Wx Stn such as a WS2300 type ( but you get all the wx data) but then use an Inspeed Vortex anemometer with WeatherDisplay for the windspeed component alone which will provide an update rate of 1 sec…
Inspeed is here
I have this type of setup on my website as my standby system
Edit: The Davis VP2 sample rate for windspeed is 2.5 secs
Thanks!! You gave me the pieces to the puzzle and I
How about going the 1-Wire route?
Hobby Boards do an anemometer that will plug direct into your PC and then you can run either the Weather Display program or the 1-Wire program to display the info.
I don’t know what the update speed is on this though. As I’ve just got one, but not put it up yet, than I hope it’s going to be around 5 seconds or less.
Really? 8O I was just going through your 3 page post of problems with the 2300 and now, I understand why I should use Inspeed anemometers. I then tried to convince myself that I can afford a Davis VP2. But now I

The main reason for suggesting the Hobby Boards anemometer is because you said you’re only looking for wind speed & direction.
Going the Inspeed route you’ll get eh fast update but you’ll need something else, like the WS2300 anemometer, to give the wind direction.
With Hobby Boards you only need the anemometer, connecting lead and the USB or Serial connector to get it up and running (with a program of course).
The problems I’ve had have all been with the Le Crosse anemometer. The rest of the unit has worked fine since it was installed about 3 years ago. That’s why I’m changing to the Hobby Boards anemometer, but I’ll still use the rest of the data from the WS2300.
That 2nd variable thing had dawned on me as well. I was looking at the Inspeed wondering where the vang was and then it hit me. I thought 1-wire = 1 variable. But then I read the 1-wire basics on the Hobby board. I
Dave,
If you need any more help deciding
I ran my La Crosse with the 1-wire wind instrument for over a year until I could step up to the VP and it worked as well as the VP wind does
Plus once you have it added you can additional 1-wire sensors such as Humidity (the other weak area for La Crosse) and Lightning Detector
Good luck,
Bob
An excellent choice in the end for the Hobby Boards anemometer…you’ll enjoy WeatherDisplay too…
I actually found the Davis VP2 cabled for $335. I do want it all! Not just the wind data but… I’m going wind only right now that I have the choice (thank you). The other thing is that I have a gazillion trees… mounting issues might cost a little as well. But… I do have a chain saw and works really good.
Great forum and a good read!
Dave
you could maybe consider the Davis Wizard
which is just wind/speed and temperature /barometer
Don’t know if you see this but you can get a direction vane with your inspeed. Don’t know if it works with WD.

I saw that but going by the main description (“INSPEED VORTEX VISUAL VANE (not electronic)”) I assumed it didn’t connect to anything, just a visual reference.
Yea! I got my order today from the Hobby-Board. But
Here is the link for the assembly instructions for the Hobby-Boards Wind Instrument:
http://www.hobby-boards.com/catalog/links/wind-r3/Assembly%20Instructions.pdf
and yes, it does mater which end you put the cups on and which the direction vane.
This link describes the cabling used to connect it up:

further information can be found in the various entries of the HowTo section on the hobby boards site:

Thanks!
Duh! What was I thinking!
Dave
You beat me to it Steve. I got half way through typing out exactly what you’ve just posted. #-o
Dave,
You’ll like the update speed, mine is updating about once every 2 seconds. My Weather Display has never seen so much info coming in!!
Well
Dave,
Did you open your Comm Port settings from Control Panel and tick “I want to use windspeed from a 1-wire station”
Also can you add your station to your profile, I had to search a bit to remember what station you had, which I believe is a La Crosse…
