New Forum Theme

The changes look good to me, thanks!

I Like it myself

Brad

Darn, I liked the mustards, but you gotta do what you think is best.

The changes were a shock initially, Chris. But after looking around for a few minutes, Bravo! The new look has grown on me rather quickly. I especially like the ‘New’ flags on threads with new posts, and have otherwise encountered nothing egregious. Kudos for a job well done. =D>

First I thought I punched in the wrong address, then I realised the changes.

Very very nice.

Thanks guys, good job.

The colour I see on the screen showing unread posts is a mid grey for the title of the thread not black which if I remember correctly was black before, and the new flag being that mustard yellow seems to jump out at you and since this display is unread threads it seems a little redundant, they are all new. This is the only way I ever read the forum unless I search.

Anyway as it seems I’m the odd one out here I’d ignore me and carry on… most others seem to like it. As to the old theme I fully understand why Chris wants to ditch it, its just a pity because it was so clear.

OK. I think I’ve fixed the mid-grey title issue. It does look better black. There are thousands of lines of CSS settings which include colours in many places. It’s not possible to easily find out where a CSS style appears on forum pages, so I’ve changed the most obvious colours/settings based on what was obviously not right when I was looking at a page/part of the forum. I’ve also avoided changing every colour I find in the style files because there are so many of them and not being able to find out where the colour is used makes it difficult to check the effect of a change.

I’m open to considering other changes…but given the possible differences in terminology that people might use for parts of the forum, it would be useful if screen shots were provided showing the particular elements (in context) so that I don’t go trying to fix the wrong thing.

If I’m understanding the flag you’re talking about (I’d have called it orange and it has the word ‘new’ on it?) then it’s possibly doing more than you think it’s doing. It does denote threads that have unread messages in them, BUT it’s also a link button. If you click it, it takes you directly to your unread messages in that thread.

Some blues changed to Indian Red. That’s got a better contrast against the backgrounds than the original mustardy colour (which was a little fuzzy looking) but avoids using yet more blue.

This is coming along nicely Chris, thanks to you and your testers for all the hard work.

Beautifull.
:lol:

I like that :slight_smile: Thanks for all the time you have put into this…

Nice !
fresh clean looking top !

’ go up’ and now ’ go down’ is a good addition

thnx Chris

Wow, that was a surprise this morning! :slight_smile:

Overall, I like the more white space and layout of the site. Not that there was anything wrong with the previous, just that this in new and brighter,

Is there any way for the user to change the font size in the posts? Quoted black looks tiny now, and I need to change to stronger glasses when reading this site compared to others. I know I can zoom in, but then I have to pan left/right to read text that spills off of the screen.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Chris

Thank you very much for all your work on upgrading the SMF. I have been thru that myself - and I know its a BIG work. Especially if you have many add-ons/plugins that need to be updated too…

I have a suggestion for the theme:

Some users on very big wide screens might find the width too wide of the forum - I see you have this in the theme css file:

/* This division wraps the entire forum when a forum width is set. */
div#wrapper
{
	margin: 0 auto;
	min-width: 764px;
	max-width: 2300px;

Maybe the max-width could be lowered to for example 1280px?

Personally I have a wide-screen laptop (1600x900 px) and i would prefer a width of max. 1280px

Best regards,

Henrik

There’s no standard way I know of to increase the font size on a user-by-user basis. I’ve increased the font size for quotes now though so maybe that will help?

Oh, thank you! That is tons better!

While you’re looking at things, click on the “Show unread posts since last visit” Anyway to space the threads apart a tiny bit more? They’re hard to pick out the thread title. (or were unread titles bold before?)

After just a short time wandering around, the new layout has grown on me. I bounced over to WXforums, and that one now looks dull. :slight_smile:

Thanks,
Steve

I’m not sure…what do others think? I run on wide-screen monitors (2 @ 1680*1050) so the forum can be wide for me if I have the browser maximised. However, I don’t like to see a lot of empty wasted space either side of the content and have a longer vertical scroll to see the content that’s wrapped more.

Do you mean this display? If you click on the orange “new” button it takes you directly to the new post.

The new theme is very attractive and funtional. thanks very much for the improvments, Chris :slight_smile:

My screen resolution is 2560 X 1440, and I keep my browser window open about 1600 pixels wide. I like forums that automatically wrap to whatever width I have my window.

Yep, I know. I meant that the three topics in your example seem too close together. Actually, on your image they don’t but on my screen the list looks more compact. Just different browsers, I guess. Not a big deal at all!

[EDIT] Ah, I know what it is! I used to have the thread title and author all on one line, didn’t it? Now it is two lines, with author below the title. That’s probably why it isn’t quite as easy to pick out the thread title. Nevermind. :slight_smile:
