ECMWF/GFS problem?

I may have the answer.
I had a play with the WXSIM, WXSIMate & euromix this afternoon.
After some experimentation, including doing what the error asked and changing the file from wdata.txt to wdatamixed.txt, the issue seems to be caused by euromix.exe being case sensitive with the drive letter in the file names.

My PC is setup with the drive letter in upper case “C:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt” but I noticed in euromixed.exe the “Source file name” & “Mixed data file to create” names both had the drive letter in lower case (c:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt), so I changed it to upper case and had an error-free auto run.

I hope it’s that simple, I’ll find out in a few hours, when my next auto-run is due.

Just to see what happens I have changed my file names to have uppercase drive letters in euromix. Interestingly I got the error message but it was because I had not changed the Import screen file name in WXSim to have an uppercase drive letter. So it happens if your full path file names are not EXACTLY the same case in both WXSim and euromix as it compares with case not just letters! Just ran again with both full path file names EXACTLY the same uppercase drive letter in both euromix and WXSim Import and do not see the error.

So this is an error in WXSim comparing case sensitive file names which Tom can fix easily I hope and probably explains why forecasts work OK.

Be good if someone else can check this out running on Windows just to be sure.

Stuart

Now had two auto-runs on my Windows 10 PC and no more error messages.
So the case sensitive file naming seems to be the issue and hopefully Tom can do an update to avoid the issue.

That was the issue! No more messages after correcting the drive letter in path!

Thanks Bulgie

Unfortunately it was not the solution for me.
I have tried both C:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt and c:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt but still get the error.
I think Tom is busy and hasn’t responded to my email yet.

Check the case in both euromix and WXSim Input screen, they must be identical in both places. Also make sure in WXSimate that the file created is wdata.txt.

Stuart

Thanks.
I found more c: instead of C: and changed everything.
In addition, I also found that the ECMWF/GFS settings in Wxsimate were not carried over from the previous version. Everything (ECMWF /GFS mix settings) were unticked.

Now a run has just taken place and this time without an error.

Oebel

Changing the drive letter from a capital to lowercase letter to match the others eliminated the message.

I, also have been getting warnings about old GFS/ECMWF data, wrong addresses to obtain FOUS Data and Error 62 messages. and I have been running the same ‘paths’ for years!
I also have not upgraded to Tom’s recent Rev. .

If you think you have ‘cracked the code’, best to run for a few days before declaring totally resolved.
The weird thing is they do not appear with every scheduled forecast.
Sometimes forecasts will run for one or two days with no messages. and then all of a sudden one or several will pop up. Very Intermittently.

Speaking of the ECMWF/GFS and the EUROMIX screen,
are the “Model Initialization times” located just below the " MIX " button, on the upper left side of the EUROMIX screen, suppose to automatically update, or are you to manually push the MIX button above to update?
I’ve been noticing that when I check on that screen, from time to time, the dates seen to be 24 to 48 hours behind of the current date.
I thought that perhaps it was due to either Chris’ working on the server, or the recent problems with NOAA, or the issue being discussed in the trail above or maybe I just don’t have something set correctly!

By the way, what is that “instant refresh” option just below the percentage ‘slider’ for the GFS/ECMWF mixture adjustment.

Dave

It’s possible that the dates/times come from the status files that have been broken. I know the files were added for a reason after discussing it with Tom, but it’s many years ago and I’ve slept more than once since then so my brain has been wiped.

It’s quite possible that recent FOUS errors may be related to the NOAA/NWS outage.

Hi Chris ,
Was not sure how, or even if, all these variables have affected WXSIM in some way, but I’m sure it will all be resolved soon.

Dave

Case in point to my earlier post above.
This morning, I awake to an Error 62 warning and my WXSIM-Lite missing and off of my Task bar, (Keep in mind that I have been getting no warnings or messages with the forecasts being produced for the past 3 Days.) and had to re-install.

Also, when checking the EUROMIX screen, the " Model Initialization Date " is still saying
ECMWF: 2024-06-28-18 and the GFS: 2024-06-28-18 Today is 2024-06-30

Question is, is this all being caused by external issues, or are they being caused by internal local issues with my WXSIM program such as a wrong setting or a corrupt file somewhere?

Hello, just to confirm that indeed and after a few days with the error you are commenting on, I have changed the font from uppercase to lowercase and the problems are over, so many thanks to Budgie for his contribution.
Kind regards

If you run WxSimate manually are there any errors shown? My GFS/ECMWF data has been stable for the last 18 hours so you should be picking up good data now. I’ve just run my own WxSimate/Euromix/Wxsim installation and didn’t get any errors and the initialization times are good (06z on 30th for ECMWF and 12z on 30th for GFS).

Hi Chris,

Just ran WXSIMATE manually with no apparent warnings or messages.
Time stamps all showing 06-30 date.

Funny thing is, my 11AM EDT forecast ran just fine with no messages or warnings.
It may run fine for a couple of days and then out of the blue, throw me a warning.

But something gave me a “Error 62” warning earlier this morning.
I assume it had something to do with overnight functions. (analysis, Auto -Learn or maybe when my 5 AM EDT forecast ran.
My EUROMIX screen is still showing those “Model Initialization Times” of 2024-06-28-18
for both GFS and ECMWF.
Maybe something is not set right . What does the “Instant refresh” button mean just below the percentage “slider”
I do not have that checked .

I don’t know. Mine is ticked but I don’t remember ticking it.

Data from my server has been ‘reliable’ again since yesterday’s (29th June) 12z run so your overnight runs should have picked that up.

Chris,

That’s good to know.
Your findings suggest that the issue is with my program somehow.
I will tick that “instant refresh” button, check to see if it updates the Model Data times, and then run another forecast.

****** Update, by ticking that “Instant refresh” button, it changed the dates to 2024-06-30-06 for the ECWMF and 2024-06-30-12 for the GFS.

I will now run a few more scheduled forecasts over the next day or two, to see if I get any more messages and/or WXSIM-LITE disappears again.

By what I am seeing in the post trail above, it looks like there could be a multitude of issues going on.

I think Tom is on vacation, right now, but he might want to see this trail when he gets back.

Cheers,
Dave

Just confirm that you’re not using WXSIM 2024 Build 1.0 at the moment? If not then maybe do the update and see if your issues are still occurring with the latest version, as you could be seeing problems Tom has already fixed.

After you’ve done a manual “Mix” of the data, ticking the “Instant refresh” means that if you alter the percentage slider, the bottom graph & wind map will update automatically to show the new mixed data. Left unticked means you have to click the “Mix” button after each slider change.
Note: When ticked, the refresh takes a little time and the slider flashes to show it’s working on the refresh. During this process you can’t make another change to the slider.

Hi Budgie,

I am currently using WXSIM 2024 Build 1.0 beta
I have not upgraded to Tom’s latest update as I thought that the changes were mainly to accommodate Cumulus users of which I am not.

Thanks for explaining the “instant refresh” button on the EUROMIX screen.
Right now, I am using a 50/50 mix of GFS and ECMWF, and intending to hold on to that for at least the near future until accuracy of the forecasts dictate I should give one a slight advantage over the other.

Update :
No warning or messages about WXSIMATE at this time, however EUROMIX screen still not automatically updating to latest GFS and ECMWF run times. (still showing yesterday’s times).

WXSIMATE seems to be downloading information and saying that “GFS and ECMWF mixed” below the progress bar.
Dates showing correctly on both sides of the screen.
But when you look at the EUROMIX screen, you would not be convinced that the Model Data is the latest by those ( yesterday’s ) dates.

Source name file on EUROMIX is c:\wxsim\wdata.txt
Mixed Data file to create is: c:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt
In WXSIMATE , Working directory is : C:\wxsim
File To Create is : c:\wxsim\wdata.txt
“Include this saved file” is : c:\wxsim\readydat.txt
Cannot find any disconnects.
In DATA IMPORT screen “data file to import” is : c:\wxsim\wdatamixed.txt

WXSIM-Lite screen showing File name: gfsdat0dt=2024-07-01-06.txt
Path to WXSIM is : c:\wxsim
Also, Path to Log Files : c:\wxsim
Path to Model Data Files : c:wxsim\wxsimlitedata

If any of these paths are no longer correct, please let me know.
Many Thanks.
