E-mail notifications contain the whole post [fixed]

All the e-mails I have received include the whole text of the post, and I don’t see a way of turning that off.

I’ve changed the setting “In notification emails, always send excerpts instead of full posts” which I think might reduce the size of notification emails. It’s a forum wide setting rather than a user setting so it’s one way or the other for everyone.

I think sending full messages is allowed because it is possible to send email replies to posts. That’s not something I’ve enabled and I’m not sure I will do.

Not sure if this is related or not, but yesterday I think I turned off all email notifications. Today I received an email with a summary of what I believe was all new posts made in the forum. Waiting to see if I get another email tomorrow.

Email notifications might be different to receiving a daily digest. The digest might not be considered as a notification as such. I don’t know if you can turn it on/off on a user by user basis though.

In your Preferences | Emails look at…

Activity Summary | When I don’t visit here, send me an email summary of popular topics and replies

That might be what is generating the digest message you’re getting?

Checked my deleted email folder and found the email. It had an unsubscribe link so I clicked it and it told me “You are not receiving summary emails”. Will see if I get one tomorrow or not

If that’s turned on by default I might turn it off. That could generate a lot of emails!

I found the setting to disable summary emails for all users. I’m guessing that with that turned off people can still select to turn it back on for their own account.

I don’t think we get the choice any more. . .

I noticed that. I’m going to look for other options but I’m just busy with some other background stuff right now so it will have to wait a little.

No email this morning. Not sure you need to turn them off for everybody. I think it just sent the one email per day. Initially I was receiving lots of emails…one for every new post or event that happened, so yea, there were lots of emails hitting my inbox until I went into preferences and turned them off. Things have settled down now with the emails it seems.

I don’t think I got any summary e-mails. . . but I can’t be certain: the e-mail headers are so long that my preview doesn’t even begin to show a message. And I usually delete them all immediately, anyway :slightly_smiling_face:

Here’s a few examples, with one from “the other place” for comparison.

The ‘other place’ uses SMF so the emails would be different to any generated from ‘this place’. Those are notification emails as opposed to summary/digest emails. It might be possible to change the format of the subject to make it a bit more obvious what the message is about.

Summary/Digest…

If enabled the summary/digest is sent to anyone who has logged in during the last 180 days but hasn’t logged in within the last 24 hours. That’s why I think it would generate quite a lot of email traffic. A lot of people have been logging in fairly irregularly recently. Not every day but often within the last 180 days. That irregular usage pattern is what is likely to generate a lot of email traffic. For example, this site generated 5 times as many emails in the first 24 hours of using Discourse as it had done during the previous 24 hours.

I know WXForum uses SMF, and I know they are notification e-mails.

I was under the impression that the e-mails I signed up to in Discourse were also notification e-mails: if not, I’ll just switch them all off. I don’t want any summaries/digests.

We’re talking about two different things.

You probably have signed up for notification emails. These are much the same as in SMF and they’re not a problem.

There is also a summary/digest email sent out every day to anyone who last logged in > 24 hours ago and < 180 days ago. You probably haven’t seen this type of message because you tend to log in every day. This is what I think will generate a lot of email traffic. For example, if a user only logs in once in 180 days then they will get 179 digest emails for the days they didn’t log in. There are a lot of people who only log in fairly infrequently and that will probably generate hundreds of extra messages each day.

I’ve taken a longer look at the digest options and I’m able to set them as monthly rather than daily. That’s a lot less traffic so I’ve re-enabled them. Irregular users will now get a short email for a few months after their last visit showing some recent posts. That reminds them that the forum still exists and might make them visit again.

OK. Think I misunderstood your previous post. . . :slightly_frowning_face:

I’ve made a change to the email subject which should remove some info from it so you can see the title (or at least part of it) of the post the notification applies to.

Please let me know if it looks any better now.

Sorry, last 8 e-mails (since 12:29 UTC) went into spam: I’ve only just found them.

Getting better: you seem to have removed the category?

Do we need, e.g., “Chris via Weather-Watch.com” for the sender?

Yes. I’m not sure that was really necessary.

I’m not sure if that’s something I can change but I’ll go digging.
