Wunderground Rain rate oddity

This really isn’t a bug per se. A follower of my weather station noticed a strange anomaly with Weather Underground yesterday during some very heavy rain events that we had here. We had a number of episodes of very heavy rain and while Weather Display was properly showing rain rates of up to 6" per hour, Weather Underground never showed more than an inch an hour… Also, the WU rain rate curve was very smooth as if it was seeing filtered and averaged data.

Has anyone else seen this and have any idea what the problem may be?

Tom,

This is most likely caused by the frequency in which WD uploads data to Wunderground. I’m currently only updating every 5 minutes to Wunderground. So, basically, it’s just taking a snapshot of the current weather data every 5 minutes. The likelyhood of the snapshot being captured at the exact time of a large rainrate is probably unlikely as my Davis VP2 will show rainrates oscillate dramatically during torrential downpours.

Hope this helps!
Michael

I don’t think that is the problem since I am using WU’s Rapid Fire option and updating them every 3 seconds.

Tom,

I found the same thing when using rapidfire. What I found was that the “rain last hour” tag was being sent to Wundergrounds “rain rate”. So if you got 10mm in the last hour it will show a flat 10mm line instead of rain rate which goes up and down with the intensity of the rain.

Does this sound like the same thing? I posted a question about it but got no response. I gave up and disabled rapidfire and it was OK again.

Yep, it sounds like exactly what I am seeing. Sounds like something that Brian needs to look in to…
