WS2350 & WD not communicating properly [resolved]

Hi All, just set up my weather station and everything seems fine until i plug it into the pc. When i try to get data history or current into WD or heavyweather it only reads the initial condition at the time and then doesn’t get anymore data. The base station also stops receiving a signal and i get dashes. Signal icon also stays on long and nothing happens.

As soon as i quit WD or heavy weather and unplug the USB data starts to be received again by the base station. Tried both software on Vista and XP and it still does not work. I’m using the SERIAL to USB converter that came with it. Been through all WD setting and i can not figure out why it is not working.

If anyone knows why please help.

Thanks
Liam

Liam,

You are not trying to run WD and Heavy Weather at the same time are you?

You can only have one of the above programs run at a time, so make sure you have exited both programs, check they are really closed using your task manager, then connect the station, make sure it continues to receive data on the console for a bit and then try and launch only one of the programs and see what happens.

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply. No im only opening one application at a time. Already tried that as well, plugged in USB and it continued to get data but then when i open either of the applications data stops.

Tried again a few times and still no luck. In top bar it says 2310 com port ok and in the status window it keep saying stage 1 ok or something like that.

Cant figure it out. Anyone else have any ideas whats going on.

Thanks

What system are you running and are you using a USB to Serial connector between the console & the PC?
If running the later then make sure you have the most upto date drivers for it.
Also, make sure your AV or firewall programs aren’t blocking access for some reason.

I run Vista and i have also tried it on XP SP3. Yes im using the USB to Serial converter. I used the drivers that came with it, will check if there’s any newer. Never though to check AV or firewall. Usually it notifies me if it blocks something but it didn’t say anything.

Thanks

Hi, updated driver earlier and checked firewall and everything. Opened WD and everything been working now for 2 hours constant running.

Driver update seem to have done the job. Thank you very much for your help, something obvious and i didn’t even think of it.

Glad it was a relitively easy fix then Liam.

Hi Again, unfortunately after the 2 hours running other night it just stopped working again and has not worked since then.

Seems to be temperamental. Ive tried a few times again but no luck. Is it just a problem with mine or do more people have this problem. According to WD com port is OK and there is nothing wrong but again station stops receiving data and i get nothing.???

There must be something i am missing?.

Liam :frowning: :?

EDIT: tried again and its been running for a bit now. So it does work just very temperamental. Quite confusing.

because the 2310 uses some non standard communications, usb to serial is not recommended, unless its a good quality one
try though not setting in wd to use as wireless mode

Ok Thank you, will try again a few times normally and see what it does and if it does not work will try it with wireless mode un-ticked. I thought that the usb to serial converter they provided might not be high quality so i might purchase a high quality one.

Cant understand why they didn’t just make it a USB connection now-a-days, serial us outdated.

It is working now the last few times i tried it. So i would say its resolved now at last.

Thank you

USB has its problems
serial is tried and proven

Thank you Brian. Going to try and get a high quality usb to serial converter or serial card today. I think that its definitely the usb serial that’s the problem.

Thanks for your help

Hi. My problem is now fully solved. I thought i would post the full solution to this for any one else that has a problem.

If your WS2350 or any other 23xx series (should be the same), is not working correctly with WD, like in my first post. Station stops receiving data.

Buy a high quality Prolific USB to SERIAL converter, these are available from Maplin - Maplin Electronics | Batteries, Cables, Chargers, Cameras, Lighting for

I am wondering if this may be the problem I’m having with my WS-2300 and WD not being able to recieve stored data sets via the Serial - USB? On a Windows 7 64bit system. It does recieve live data when the pc is on, but will not fetch the stored data sets from the WS…
