WS 2315 Interference

Thanks Bob. I will look into this more. Looks very promising. Thanks again for your help!

If you wanted an excuse, as many of us need with “The Boss” watching what we waste in their opinion on our Hobby, to get your feet wet in the 1-wire world this would make an excellent one

I have the 2310 and the difference the 1-wire makes in wind speed reporting is unbelievable…

As a temporary fix have you tried covering the gap/crack with tape?

Admin,

I didn’t think of that, I may try that until I get a new wind sensor. I may get the 1-wire though as a replacement.

Bob,

Would the 1-wire connect to the thermo-hygro sensor or is it setup another way? After looking at it, I really like that alternative better and it’s only about $30 more than a LaCrosse wind sensor (I can sell that one to the Mrs.)! 8)

-Jeff

the 1 wire is connected to your pc via a 1 wire com port adaptor (serial or USB versions are available)
and then you set in wd to use the 1 wire as well, and tick to use the 1 wire windspeed with a 2300 station (i have had a few 2300 users tick that and then wonder why they dont get any windspeed or wind direction)

Makes sense. I think I will definitely give the 1-wire a shot. Thanks for the info!

If you go the USB adaptor route, you are looking at another $25.00 or so but that then would allow you to eventually add a 1-wire Lightning detector and/or a 1-wire humidity (far more accurate than the La Crosse humidity sensor)

How could “The Boss” say no to a lightning detector… LOL

I have been having this WSW issue with the Wind Direction on a 3600 la Crosse for weeks now and it has almost driven me mad !

I have to climb an extremely steep goat track in my 4x4 to get to the station which is about 100 Metres up the top of a hill. I have been up and down that track more times in the last couple of weeks than ever before trying to work out this problem.

Every single day at 3 PM it goes WSW and pretty much sticks there until 8pm (Sunset). I have tried everything to fix it, even installing an external antenna on the base unit to ensure a good signal, but nothing helps.

You can see the problem graphed here,

Did you try to block the light from coming into the sensor at all ?

I’de be interested to hear how you went.

I tried but I could never figure out exactly how the light was reaching the optical sensor. Therefore, I just “gave up” and purchased a new wind sensor. Everything seems fine now. I am curious though, did you have this problem even when it was cloudy? If it was cloudy, mine would not register the WSW, only when it was sunny. That’s why I think it was one of the optical senors. This seems to be one of LaCrosse’s famous “defects”.

Well I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and being summer here it’s been hot and dry with little cloud. Funnily enough there was some cloud moving in today and it seemed to be working a little better, infact I thought I had fixed it by playing around with the serial cable and adding a balun … but then it ‘jammed up’ again.

I ended up concluding that it must have been a issue with the base unit since it is the only thing that keeps time (tried changing the time on it also)… I didn’t even think about the cycle of the sun which keeps pretty good time so makes perfect sense !

I think a replacment wind sensor is in order.

Thanks for the info.

Glad I could help and welcome to the Boards. Good luck with your new sensor!

Hi
I am having the same problem with my la crosse, do they reconise it as a fail, any one tried to complain.I have only had it 5 days and the sun is shinning, not normal i know for the UK
Thanks
Gary

I have a WS2300 and had the same probelm with the wind at 2pmish sticking on wsw. I just got up and wrapped some black insolation tape round the sensor…just below the join, but above the mounting arm. Stopped all the sunlight that may have been getting in to affect the readings as the sun moved round to the west.

Tom

Is this a manufactureing defect

Yes I think so. alot of Lacrosse WS23xx owners seem to have the problem. The plastic seems to deteriorate and let some light in to effect the optical direction sensor.

Chaser80 when you stated insulation tape are you refering to electrical tape or something else. my station is not that old but is exhibiting the WSW symptom. should I waranty it and get another one or try your solution.

thanks

My La Crosse was only 3 days old when the problem stared, I am going up on the roof in a minute and as we have another hot day here I will let you know if the black electrical tape things work, I am also going to try and contact La Crosse and the place where it got it, lets see the out come.

Technoguy yes sorry it is electrical tape. just plain black. I wrapped bout 4 or 5 layers around it.
In regards to your warranty I read another guy having the same problem within warranty time and sending it back. He found a crack in his housing. He got a new one…but if it is as simple as putting some tape round it as opposed to waiting how eva long for a new one…I would choose the Tape! thats just my opinion tho. Its up to you.

Tom

Thanks again guy. gary-fcw keep me posted in how this fix works for you. If good results i will climb on the roof and follow suit.

Ok I drug my ladder out and found some electrical tape. I climed up and put two wraps of the tape on the anemometer body and low and behold it appears to be working. I will have to wait until tommorrow because it is overcast now, but my hunch is it will work just fine. I will figure out something more permanent when I take it down to move it to its new higher home in a few weeks
