After installing the listed patch, my server became very buggy. Other computers mapping to the server could not gain access, my antivirus (AVG) said my license number was invalid, and WD would either stop updating the web site or stop functioning entirely. A fair number of posts on this patch if you Google it, the patch apparently fixes a major security hole, but is havoc on many machines. Anyone else experiencing the problem? Removing the patch fixes things, but opens up the security issue.
I patched 3 x XP’s, 3 x W2K, and 1 x Vista and don’t have a problem with any of them. But it does deal with file/disk sharing so if you are using that (I don’t) I guess there could be a bigger chance of problems.
i had the very same prob Chris…I had to unistall that update. Im running XP SP2 on 2 pc’s
Because it’s apparently an important patch, I tried reinstalling it a few times, always with the same result. Then WD began to freeze or shut down even with the patch removed. One of the uninstalls produced a warning that WD may not operate properly without the patch. Doing a fresh install of WD after removing the patch seems to have stabilized WD for the last 14 hours, but I’m not ready to declare it “fixed” yet.
This may give me the kick in the rear to update Win 2000 server to the 2003 version I have on hand but keep postponing.
