My WX is now running nicely. I moved from my laptop (bad/intermittent Com port faults) across to my old (university ays) P2 300 64MB RAM machine running XP. It has nothing else on the Drive apart from the OS and WD. I have it setup so that my WX PC utilises XP’s ICS to share the dial up connection for uploading WX data to the web… (this is frustratingly slow, so I have broadband coming ASAP…)
Anyway, the whole system plays together nicely, but I have one little problem. The WX PC, when doing an FTP upload takes AGES to execute any commands from Setup/view/action bar at the top of the screen. In fact it can make the system hang or WD crash. All the graphs will actually disappear, the system looks like it has frozen, and then it finally frees itself. I wonder if WD ismissing data from the WX console during this period? I don’t think there is enough RAM in the PC? is there an optimum spec machine for WD to run on in my configuration?
Hi
that really does sound like the very bare minimum PC to run it on unfortunatly
i should be able to improve some of the routines, but what usualy happens is faster pc’s take care of programers not very effecient programing!
a new MB and CPU and memory (but probably power supply too) does not cost too much… 8O
Yeah i thought as much, it was going ok until I started the FTP uploading to the webpage…that has stretched the machines resources… :x
I am going to purchase a second hand machine for the WX, what is the spec you recommend to run WD (with regards to RAM and Processor)? I can’t find any system specific requiremetns in the Help file… 8O
That’s a Microsoft minimum spec machine, i.e. unusable!
A P2-300 will just about handle XP with 256MB RAM. At work we’re running XP office systems on 350MHz machines with 256MB RAM (or more usually 384MB RAM…the base 64MB with a 256MB module added), however, these aren’t for power users.
I’m running WD under Win 2K on P3/733’s with at least 256 megs. That level of PC is pretty cheap here now, but I understand that may not be the case in NZ
Looks like my machines are way of the mark in actually being able to run WD nicely. The interesting thing is, that the old WX PC ran adequately when it WAS’NT doing the FTP upload, however, that upload must cause some serious system resource to be used as it is almost stopping the machine while it completes the task. I have just recieved my Jetstream router, so I will see if there is any difference when i turn off the XP ICS function and remove the dial up bottleneck…
Where can I buy a suitable Internet ready PC in NZ Brian? Do u have any contacts or good firms to deal with?
hi
you coudl stagger the stuff done for the web page updating
that would help
i.e use the customise internet and file creation setup screen
and set times to update and upload the web table
and then separate times to update/upload the other gif images needed
that might save getting a new pc
I’ve noted another problem (I hear you all comming, Who’s still using that stuff, but, i thing this may be interesting). I Installed the wd10.18d on an Laptop Compaq Contura 430CX, the veri first laptop with an active TFT (only 640480 32 bit color possible–NO 800600), with no CD an a Hard Disk of 650MB and 32MB RAM on a AT486DX4 100MHz processor. YEP!
And indeed, after upgrading from 10.12t it di!dn’t work any more, so I took all my courage and upgraded my os from win95 => win98SE
