What is the best OS to run with Weather Display

I am running an ancient WD version, 10.37S Build 17. I’m a, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it kind of guy. Same holds true with my computer. I’m on a late 2012 Mac Mini running 10.10.5. WD is happily integrated with Indigo and has been working flawlessly for many years. Seems that there was some sort of change sometime after Build 17 that when I tried to go above it caused all sorts of problems with my system so I backed back down to 17. Thought I could look at my old post to see what that problem was but don’t see it so I don’t remember what the issue was.

Anyway my vintage 2010 Davis VP2 is at their place being cleaned, pressed and updated. I’ve got some programs bitching at me that I need to get off of 10.10.5 so I’m considering doing some updating. Are there OS issues with WD? It’s going to be a balancing act, Indigo has some USB issues with 10.13 (I get confused with the names so I use the numbers. Guess that’s way Bond goes by 007) so I’m likely to stay away from that one. Is there anything I should be aware of with WD? As I said, everything has been working great for many years so I don’t get into the nuts and bolts of the day to day operation. I’m basically going to be a newbie AGAIN!

just make sure you have the latest silicon labs usb driver for OSX

Brian brings up a good point to update that driver - if you are using usb driver of course which I think you are.

Otherwise really not much to do thanks to Brian and all his improvements.

Based on your version I cant tell if WD resides in /home/username/documents - if not you should that was a good move.

I have the same station (as I think many do here) and currently on Sierra with no major issues. I would say if your mac mini can goto sierra go for it. Of course getting hold of Sierra will be DIFFICULT. I learned this the hard way with Apple, once they come out with a new OS you cannot download the old one. NOTE: If you ever have then you can but if you never have then you can’t. Btw if you need it the only way to get it is either someone with a USB stick OR your local apple genius bar can do it (you have a mini so easy to transport - I have 2 27" iMacs so it was hard to lug those around a mall).

There are those on here who are successfully running High Sierra with WD. Again thanks to Brian for making that happen (High sierra makes major changes to the file system). Its on my list of things to try out (i’m lucky in that I have an older mac to test on).

You are on El Cap. Apple has made great improvements in the versions since that. So it is worth updating to something.

Any chance of getting a newer mac mini or other mac? If you do it will come with High Sierra.

Just my $.02 for what its worth… Hope that helps. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I will do my best to help based on my experiences.

has the issue you had improved DeputyDawg ?

Thanks for your input. My app is in the application folder. I can’t remember what the issue was but one time I did an update and nothing worked. I put back my current version and everything went back to working OK except there are times it doesn’t do the monthly reset so I have to manually reset the monthly rain total. Don’t have a lot of that in Phoenix so hasn’t been a big problem. It’s looking like Sierra is the way to go. I also have to stay compatible with Indigo my home automation program which seems to have lots of issues with High Sierra. There’s know problem getting Sierra, while I’m slow to update OS’s I keep a copy of all the ones I haven’t installed. I’ve got it sitting on a zip drive.

Thanks again

the question is where do you have the settings files etc
ie might be in the library folder
if so now is in
[yourhome]/Documents/wdisplay/

It is in /Library/Application Support/wdisplay/ which is the main directory not in the user directory.

that is the problem
copy that whole folder to the above directory structure and then delete from there when using the latest version

Great! Soon as I get my VP2 back I’ll do that. Should I update to the latest version and get it working before I update to Sierra (currently 10.10.5) or wait till I’ve updated OS’s or does it matter? May be a few weeks before I get around to OS update, got several priorities ahead of it.

I would use the latest WD update

@Colovin, some great suggestions were made. The big one is moving the files over to your home directory. That plus latest version I think will help you out a lot. You can do this now! Good luck !!!

@ Brian, no real changes. I still continue to get the flat lines - albeit not as often. Since the issue typically happens approx 915pm or so, I find myself checking WD before I goto bed and when I wake up @ 5am every day. I also as a good habit restart WD every few days. I would love to not have to do that, but I do. I haven’t a clue how to troubleshoot this. I have done everything you asked. This is just a weird corner case. Or it could be something stupidly simple (At my job a client was experiencing a MAJOR issue and was losing $30k/hour this system was down. Turns out a switch was plugged into the wrong port and domain - once corrected all worked fine).

Is there any debugging that can be put in to capture something like this perhaps?

I copied my settings files to /Users/xxx/Documents/wdisplay/ I was surprised at how large it was, 3.4 GB. Downloaded Build 304 and put in the apps folder. Fire it up, startup screen comes up, loading various elements then it goes away. Each time I launch it, it shows loading different elements, (3D graph, more metar, new rain chart . . . ) each time it’s just loading one, it’s something different for a few seconds and then goes away. I suspect this is what was happening last time I tried to get current. Build 17 is still running just fine.

I’ve repaired permissions (you can still do that on 10.10) and cleaned out all cache files. I hesitate to uninstall Build 17, I’d rather have something working than nothing working. Could that be interfering with B304? They have different names ( WeatherD / weatherdisplay ) so they peacefully co-exist in the app folder. I’ve attached a screen shot of the startup screen. Not sure what I’m doing wrong seems like it should be simple enough.

You are past me dude, best answered by Brian for that one !!!

I do know when I had the old one then new one there were two executables. Think they still ran OK… but can’t recall

try
running the exectuable
from a terminal window (from the application bundle)
to see what the error is shown

What is the command for that? I don’t use Terminal much.

you would need to change to the needed directory
i,e
cd /Applications/weatherdisplay.app/Contents/MacOS/
then run the executable
./weatherdisplay

Here is the error:

Restoring the tty configuration
Exception EAccessViolation in module weatherdisplay at 00042EEF.
Access violation at address 946DD6F8, accessing address 01E5BF14.
FastMM has detected a GetMem call after FastMM was uninstalled.Runtime error 203 at 0001F64E

.zip and email me the settings files
WDISPLAY.INI and wdisplayftp.ini
and I will test/check here

Just emailed the files. Thanks1

I found it was the webfiles location that was the problem in the WDISPLAY.INI settings file
