What do the hockey pucks mean?

I added this graphical forecast for my area after seeing it on NWS and a few other WD based sites. Can someone take a look at this image and tell me what on earth the hockey stick looking this are indicating?

It appears they are related to the wind gust reading the legend and using the color, but they are uniform in length. It seems more likely that they would be the wind direction (with north being the top i guess), but it does not list wind direction in the legend.

I am sure it is simple, but I guess my mind must be as well.

Any guesses?
