Nothing like spending THREE hours troubleshooting your webcam because Norton Personal Firewall decided to crap out.
Finally in frustration uninstalled NPF and installed Sygate Firewall…
Amazingly the webcam started working again!!!

Yeah - I’m about ready to dump Norton also.
It will drive you crazy sometimes.
I just installed a router with NAT, so I’m getting ready to change. On my laptop, behind the NAT router, I have Windows firewall (XP SP2) and am trying Avast! anti virus. I’m really impressed with Avast! - very low on resources and works like a charm.
I’ve heard from some folks that you even have to run a special utility from Symantec to totally remove Norton firewall and/or anti-virus. You might want to run it to be sure there are no leftovers.
Zone Alarm
zone alarm :love4:
I also dumped NAV and their fire wall. It was preventing WDisplay from uploading. It was a ■■■■■■ to get rid of. I still have fragments on the computer that seem embedded with the registry and so far it causes no problem, but even with their removal tool, you have to go in and manually remove folders, clean the registry, look for mystery logs and applications and the like. Kind of like getting rid of fleas ( assuming you have a pet) you really have to get rid of them ( of course didn’t work on daughters boyfriend - aka Numbnuts).
Zonealarm seems to be the least pain in the hind quarters to use. I do see that those who do the free download and then upgrade to the full version seem to have some problems. I went from NAV to McAfee and their updates patterened NAV. So I went with Zone Alarm and I am happy with their security suite. Even bought the Duck Hat with the savings…
I haven’t used Zone Alarm since it destroyed one of my hard drives a few years back… and some digging showed that it was a known issue 8O
I’m sure they’ve fixed it since then… uh… but I went with Sygate. Very user friendly.
I see that regardless there are better alternatives to NAV their firewall as well that work .
On an entirely different matter… That is not a pumpkin on my head as Chris seems to see.
We need a bigger picture please.
I’ve seen your PM now where you’ve told me that it’s not a pumpkin on your head, it’s a duck hat on a pumpkin.
exactly…
However, I think IQ drops rapidly here. I have my soil auger stuck in the yard. All I wanted to do is put in an 90 cm soil probe. got to the depth and now it is stuck. That sucks. I am sending data to the globe program and they require an addtional 60 and 90 cm soil moisture probe. Sounds simple enough, but the clay sub soil is holding the auger or some creature from the depths. Now that was real fun.
Going to take water hose out there now and see if I can loosen the ground a bit or really screw me up. No, the duck hat will stay inside. Going to wear my Weather Display hat instead for super Brian Powers.
Also saw that Davis is discontinuing the VP Pro for the VP Pro 2. And also saying they are getting rid of any parts as well. Sent them an email asking for clarification, we will see if they answer or send Arnold out here to silence me. If they do maybe he can pull the auger out and all this because of my duck hat.

Why run SOFTWARE firewalls at all. Do you guys not have routers with built in firewalls?
not all of us have routers. Ok. I don’t have a router. I have the kind that does wood, but try that on a computer and its not much fun after the fire truck leaves.
Actually, I have really thought about that , but I don’t know where I would put the second computer, the wife suggested where, but it just won’t fit.

Why run SOFTWARE firewalls at all.
The use of firewall software many times is done to prevent unwanted traffic out of the box, rather than Into the box. A router typically doesn’t do that. That is one of the reasons why Zone Alarm is so popular.
I only use the minimal firewall in WinXP but I use a router on all Internet connections with all family members. That provides a level of protection that is very much worth it, especially if you share data and resources between local computers.
Linksys routers have a hook for Zone Alarm built in.
Since I’ve got the SP2 update - I’ve been running my laptop behind a router with just the “windows firewall”. Yes, it’s not my main machine but…
I’m testing that machine with the “windows firewall” and “avast!” anti-virus - so far so good - I just hooked my router a couple days ago - NAT enabled
