I’m running both WD and VWS (as well as Weatherlink and VPLive) via Tinplate’s most excellent VirtualVP SW.
Since this now appears to be a discussion about stability I’ll throw in my two cents. Since Brian’s change to the memory manager, I haven’t had a single crash of WD that I can remember. VWS is also stable as long as I don’t use any of the internet functions. I think that if you dig through the ambient support forum (assuming John hasn’t deleted all the threads discussing problems with VWS at this point) you’ll find this to be a common theme. VWS has serious issues dealing with problems it might encounter (like connection timeouts) when using its internet functions. This, in my opinion, is completely unacceptable given that the user is paying extra for those features.
I see Ed has a blog now, and he is working on the problem of the FTP…which is because he uses threads…and sometimes the threads done finish and a new one is started and that is leading to more and more cpu use, etc
but he has made progress by the looks
i nearly made it to 1 million data packets (3 weeks running) with 10.35p myself, but I finaly got my boltec lightning detecor and so had to shut down the PC to install that!
LOL
and now i see a windows update wants to restart the PC…and it makes it hard to use the PC …windows menu items dont work unless you click on restart later…a new ploy of microsoft…
Yes, same here. Won’t have much activity now until spring. I have lightning detection on my TWI station, but it won’t do anything like the boltek will. Had some very impressive strikes per minute observed on the TWI lightning detector this summer.
Apperantly Boltek was either that far behind in production or they had a parts shortage.
Everywhere I checked, they were out of stock and couldn’t give me a ETA.
2000km? Wow, I assume you have the antenna mounted outdoors? How high?
From your webcam, your elevation looks on the high side.
its true, its on his new blog spot
looks like it will be released in the next few days to everyone to use
the problem was accumulating threads not closing with ftp timeouts/etc, causing more and more cpu use, etc
I tried VWS briefly, it didn’t take long for several serious bugs to rear their ugly head. And Ed, at the time, didn’t seem interested in the least in fixing them. #-o
From what’s been seen lately, Ed’s started to see the writing on the wall, and finally decided to fix up some long term outstanding bugs, of which the ftp issue was just one of several.
As I said before, I think the horse has well and truly bolted, and it’s probably too little too late.
Oz, I think Brian is right, Ed seems to have fixed the transfer issues at last. Like anole, I don’t use them, in my case simply because my web server is on the same LAN as my weather PC. Unfortunately I still find the forum tone and management oppressive, and visit as little as possible. I’m moving more and more of my core published info to WD. You can’t beat the support here.
I was publicly chastised thoroughly once on the VWS forum for simply mentioning Weather View32 in passing simply as a comparison. Oppressive is being kind.
Let’s not go round the same old discussions again. After a few posts it often starts to get more vitriolic and degenerates into a one-sided slanging match.
Let’s keep on helping Brian to keep WD as brilliant as it is and this forum the best weather software support forum in the world. People trying WD or using this forum will see for themselves how good WD is and can do their own comparisons.
I used VWS for almost 3 years. Its good he’s finally figuring out whats wrong.
I bailed after months of frustration, reformatting, loosing data and finally totally giving up.
I agree, let’s drop this thing and talk about something else. However if some cannot drop it, start your own forum…" Old biddies with nothing better to do ."
Personally, Ed has been nice to me when I have needed something from his store, service with a smile, nice advice. I, after using VWS for a while, figured I liked WD better and here I am, so what? It is like which do you like Booger King or J Benjamines… I like the latter
