do you have a usb data logger or serial data logger?
try resetting all the directories that WD is using (webfiles location, datafiles location, clientraw location)
also, what is in the file, programerrorlog.txt ?
also check that files are not write protected (e.g wdisplay.ini) etc
is this a fresh install or an install from a back up?
I am using a USB data logger, This is a FRESH install, ( I believe I said I had formatted the hard drive)
I am using a 2 year old Dell Dimension 4700, pentium 4 and gobs of mem’.
I had not setup any web site files or other stuff like that other than the WXNOW.TXT for UiView32 (aprs client) to read
The contents of the program errorlog say the following over a four day period (from install)
Normal daily resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 4
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/04/06
Normal daily resetting rain daily value , day: 4 rain today 0.0 mm
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:01 AM 09/04/06
Normal daily resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 5
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/05/06
Normal daily resetting rain daily value , day: 5 rain today 0.0 mm
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/05/06
Normal daily resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 6
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/06/06
Normal daily resetting rain daily value , day: 6 rain today 2.8 mm
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/06/06
Normal daily resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 7
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/07/06
Normal daily resetting rain daily value , day: 7 rain today 0.5 mm
Above error or program log occured at :12:00:00 AM 09/07/06
Those entries are normal logging of the reset, they are not errors.
There is an entensive history of problems with the Davis USB logger losing comm with the station. Many users have been forced to exchange their USB loggers for the serial version to get reliable operation. Davis has recently released an updated driver but this has not been successful for everyone either. Davis will exchange the logger for a serial one, this has been a 100% fix for everyone on this group who has experienced problems with the USB. If you don’t have a serial port either add a PCI card with ports or use a quality USB serial adaptor.
Sorry, but the experience on this group is that there is no sure cure for the USB blues other than switching to serial.
What a wonderful reminder of the Devils slide area you have! (I used to live in Half Moon Bay)
The USB logger has not been an issue for the last year whatsoever.
The program ran flawlessly for a Year until I formatted the HD and started over with a fresh instance, the program runs all day long no problem, until I am not around to stare at it!
Last nights close down happened around 9PM EST, I hit the bunk 30 mins earlier!
Yeah, did you know it recently fell off the cliff again, closed from April to August
If it ran OK before maybe one of the power options is set differently and that’s killing it? You’ll have to search but there are a number of suggestions relating to USB specific power serttings. Or give the new driver a try http://discourse.weather-watch.com/t/19590
yeh! I did hear about the closure (and reopening)! not funny when 92 is closed as well! ( I lived in Clipper Ridge just opposite the Harbor)
I wonder if memory running a bit low might have the same undue effect?
I noticed that memory available to another app I was running went down to 27% available, I have now moved that app off and the memory has shot up to 53%!!
I will download the USB update but will sit on it to see if the memory was the problem first!
No, the hard drive never shuts down unless I reboot the PC!!
It is also on a 1000 WATT Back Up UPS along with the WX station and other sensitive stuff!!
The link for the USB update is now dead, HOWEVER! I do not feel that this is the problem as I have now observed this lockup happenning twice in the same evening!
The first lockup occurred Friday 8th at 9PM during a NORTON virus scan! and around midnight the same evening!
The last sighting on the internet was about 5 minutes BEFORE midnight( my client software UiView32 beacons to the internet every 5 minutes).
So I believe that the 1st event was a memory issue and that the midnight event was more likely some kind of timing issue?
Norton was taken off of my pc a year ago when it caused another of my programs to cease working properly every time it scanned for virus’s, this happy event coincided with the purchase of my Davis VP2 and Brians WD program.
After the format event and not happy with the Nortons substitute (Macaffee) I elected to install the latest version of Norton 2006 (patently still a problem )!
Although the PC memory is enough for most things it does, the virus scan event causes several program issues, so what does anyone else use as a virus checker that does not cause this problem, either way it does not explain the later event at midnight occurring…
On my dedicated WD PC, I have been running Avast! free edition for almost a year now - runs very nicely along with WD without any special configuration.
The [url=Silicon Labs
USB/en/mcu_vcp.htm]link[/url] still works. It is on two lines and by clicking on the link or using copy/paste you don’t get the ‘USB/en/mcu_vcp.htm’ part which is causing the failure.
Due to numerous problems caused by virus programs, I run naked. I don’t run any of the dang resource hogs, I just practice safe computing and back up, backup, backup.
In four years, with 4 computers here in the house all behind a router, no problems.
I will take a look at Sandboxie… in the mean time the problem continues! Grrrrrrrrrr!!
At around 02.30 Sunday morning AND ALL virus scans are turned off, WD closed down AGAIN!
A closer look at Watchdog and it is also dead in the water!
Now I am really perplexed.
I had the hardest time ever trying to get WD to work after the new installation (after the FORMAT of the hard drive).
That now makes me wonder what I may have done to get WD working that maybe I shouldn’t have done !!!
Just a little recap here!
The install is on a less than 2year old dell with about a half G of memory with a XP Home o/s
A reformat had been performed of the HD, the reasons for the reformat were that I had removed a lot of stuff from the PC and its overall performance sucked and boot time took for ever! Of course Dell an’ Microsoft to blame there!
AND I love the feeling of a new PC now and then! (and I am a sadist! )
Norton is sitting on the window seat knitting a new sweater waiting for a virus but SCANS are all off!
With the fresh install of the OS, I’m assuming its Windows. Is the USB port (data logger port) utilizing the Windows power management option and/or a screensaver? Windows I believe defaults to it being on or checked, ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ - an easily overlooked item.
