You can get that appearance by right clicking on wdisplay.exe, select properties, compatibility, Disable desktop composition.
this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!
Also nobody has the problem with the realtime graph under win7 64bit as i mentioned? See under: http://discourse.weather-watch.com/t/46558
  Well, I’ve done another dumb thing. My WD locks up frequently since I got Windows 7. While it’s working, all is fine. So I read the readme file for WD (belatedly, obviously) and made some of the changes to hopefully prevent this problem. Now I seem to have killed the “aero” feature on Windows 7 and have tried some suggested fixes I found on google to no effect. What exactly do I need to set on the powered on/off for hard disk, USB-to-serial port, and the WeatherD.exe file? I’m really lost. Right now, WD is working ok, but not sure if this will continue, or how to get aero back.
Thanks for any hints you can give me.
Added: and what do I need to do with the WDisplay directory?
also make sure to set WeatherD.exe to run as administrator
Thanks! I set WeatherD.exe to run as administrator. Also, I’ve solved my aero problem - just a stupid mistake on my part.
The answer to the power question is not to allow anything to power down, except the monitor.
