There are a few threads about wdisplay.ini being ‘hosed’ after system crashes. I had the same problem, and have tried some of the suggestions, turning off WU ‘rapid fire’, ‘Starting Over Main’, always using the latest WD version, updating USB drivers, running chdisk surface test, and so on, and on, and on, without success, two or three crashes every day. I suddenly noticed, however, that the system crashes that screwed up the wdisplay.ini always occurred with activity around a USB mounted eternal hard drive. I disconnected that, uninstalled it via device manager, and WD has been stable for several days now.
I had blamed WD for the crashes, specifically buffering wdisplay.ini, but it was something eternal to the program, on the USB bus, that was causing the problem.
My setup:
Win XP HE 2002 sp3
Celeron 1.6Gig
2 gig Ram
WD Build 78
WMR 100
