I have tried to search for these answers, but have had no luck finding the solutions. I have a Vantage Pro with a data logger attached via serial port. I am running WD and WeatherLink software. I leave the PC running 24/7. I have a couple of questions. First, I have the daily rain total set to clear at midnight, which it does. The problem is that it automatically logs 3" of rain every morning at 1:00am. I have manually set the month and year rainfall totals, but WD still logs 3" of rain every morning. I can’t find where to fix this daily problem. Second problem: Today we actually received .02" of rain on the VP. WD recorded this as .60". Yesterday we actually received .01" on the VP, and WD recorded this as .30". Do I need to adjust the rain offset? Third problem: WD shows that we reach the daily low temperature at 12:34am every day, and that the temp is -12.8 every morning at this time. Our low this morning (for example) was actually 35.6 on the VP. I can’t find where to fix this either. Sorry if these are old questions, but I can’t seem to find the answers. I appreciate any help that can be offered!
We need more info is it cabled or wireless inches or mm. Setup time and date the same on Davis and computer, logger at 1 minute updates. Start by checking under control panel, station type and settings, then units and settings, offsets & rain. Look at FAQ lots of good info there.
Just to clarify you say “I am running WD and WeatherLink software.”
You are not running both at the same time are you?
-Bob
…and if you are running both at the same time, how?
This isn’t something to be fixed with the offset, that’s just for fine tuning, this is something very wrong with the way it is set up.
If you go (in WD) to Control Panel, Station Type and Settings, Davis tab, which box is checked in the All Davis Stations Rain Gauge Type section?
Were you using this WD install for another type of weather station previously?
Thanks for the quick replies! But I’m guessing from your questions that I am obviously doing something way wrong. First, this is a wireless setup, set to inches. Setup times are the same, and at 1 minute updates. By “running both”, I have WeatherLink running, and in WD, under “Station type and settings”, under “Stationless” I have “Piggy back on Davis weatherlink.wlk datafiles” checked. Under Control Panel, Station Type and Settings, Davis tab, I have tried checking and unchecking the “Davis rain gauge is a .01 inch” - no difference. But I thought since I have the “Stationless” setting checked, it takes precedence? Sorry if I am doing something really wrong here with the setup - i.e. running both at the same time. I have tried to set this up following everything I have read on the downloadable instructions, and on the forum. I do find a lot of this rather confusing. And this is my first attempt at WD, I have never used it before. I have been running WeatherLink for about 4 years. Thanks again for your assistance, and your patience!
Hmmm, “Piggy back on Davis weatherlink.wlk datafiles”, I’ve never tried running it that way so I can’t help much I think you are right though, I doubt the WD davis weather station settings do anything in that mode. I do recall that the format of the .wlk file changes depending on the options you have, so I wonder how that can work as a standard option :?
I only run WD software, but I know you can’t run two programs on the same serial port without special software like (VirtualVP), by Tinplate. Look lower down on the forum main page. There is a lot of info on running both software together.
Thanks for all of the input! I have been reading about VirtualVP and VPLive. So let me rephrase where I am trying to go with all of this. My current website offers a page showing current conditions and today’s highs and lows etc. It can be viewed here: http://www.kkpaddywhacks.com/~paddy/Pagosawx/pagosawx.html. I also have a page of graphs located here: http://www.kkpaddywhacks.com/~paddy/Pagosawx/Graphs.html. All of the data for these pages come from a Vantage Pro wireless and a serial data logger with the WeatherLink software. I would like to continue to have these same pages upload to my website as they do now. In addition, I would like to now create some new pages on my site and add all of the graphics etc. from WD. I say the more options for my viewers the merrier! But if I am understanding correctly, in order to accomplish this (that is, upload graphics from WXLink AND WD to my website) I will need VirtualVP and VPLive. (And apparently the N8VBvCom driver as well?) I hope I have stated what I am trying to accomplish clearly enough for someone to say “Yes you are correct” as opposed to "You are try to WHAT!?" #-o Forgive me if I sound clueless, but I am in fact. I can create custom embroidery with the best of 'em, but when it comes to this stuff, I need assistance. If someone could let me know if I am on the right track (with VirtualVP and VPLive) I would once again be most appreciative! Thanks again!
Close. VirtualVP allows multiple weather software programs to get data from one VP - you do need that. VPLive is really another weather software designed specifically to get data from a VP to CWOP, you don’t need that unless you need any of its special features.
Hi Niko,
Thanks for the heads-up. I downloaded VirtualVP and so far, all is well. I don’t have it live on my website yet - Since all of the data is rather skewed in WD right now. (i.e. all of the daily rain 3", low temps of -12 each day etc.) Is there an “easy” way to reset the data in WD to get rid of all of the incorrect data that has compiled since I loaded the program? Or do I need to delete WD and reinstall it to “start fresh” now that everything seems to be working correctly? Thanks again!
To be sure you have a fresh start for all the data (including stored min’s and max’s) I would suggest using this procedure.
Hello Niko,
Thanks for that link. I followed the directions, created a new directory, created the new .txt file and saved it in the new directory, downloaded WD into the new directory and installed WD. I have reset all of the settings to what they were in the “old” WD. And now the newly installed WD does not recognize my Vantage Pro at all. It will not receive any data no matter what I try. I do have VirtualVP installed and running. It appears to be working correctly and is recognizing the data from the Vantage Pro. VirtualVP shows that Virtual Console 1, 2, 3, and 4 are associated with COM6, 7, 8, and 9 and all have the green light that they are working. I have tried setting the COM port in WD to COM 6, 7, 8, and 9. For reference, everything was working just fine before I started this “new directory” project. And again, the reason I wanted a fresh install of WD was to get rid of all of the erroneous data that had accumulated before I installed VirtualVP. I closed the “new” WD and reopened the “old” WD, and it is equally as dead as the new install. I can’t get it to recognize my Vantage Pro either. I don’t think I have changed any settings in the “old” WD that would prevent it from working. Obviously I have screwed SOMETHING up! #-o The only thing I did before I created the new directory was to close all of the programs, and reboot the PC. It has not worked since. I apologize for being such a pain, but I honestly don’t know what I have done to make everything quit working. Am I frustrated? Oh yes. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks again for your time!
To get this working you need to install VirtualVP and the N8VBvCOM driver. You don’t need VPLive at this time, so I wouldn’t bother with that until you get WL and WD working. After that you can try out VPLive if you want, but it’s not neccessary.
You already have VirtualVP installed. If you don’t have the N8VBvCOM driver installed yet, do that. You don’t need to configure the driver because the default configuration is exactly what you want.
In the VirtualVP Communications Settings window, make sure the virtual console COM ports are enabled. Set the COM ports to COM16, COM17, COM18 and COM19. These are the default values, but in case you changed them, put them back to these values.
In the configuration screens for the WeatherLink and WeatherDisplay programs, set them to use COM6, COM7, COM8 or COM9. For example, you could set WL to COM6 and WD to COM7.
The reason the settings are this way is the nature of the virtual COM port driver. It creates pairs of COM ports, with each end of a pair connected by a virtual cable. So, for example, COM6 and COM16 are a pair. VirtualVP connects to one end of the pair (COM16), the weather program connects to the other end of the pair (COM6), and then the two programs can talk to each other.
Let me know if this helps or not.

Hello Steve,
I’m guessing that when I rebooted, I neglected to save the settings. I went into VirtualVP and changed the COM ports per your instructions. That’s all it took - WD fired right up and all appears to be well once again. THANKS!!
My next task is to get Weather Display Live up and working. No doubt, I’ll be writinf again for help!
Thanks again…!
