WD for iPhone

What about an iPhone app like iWD or something that reads the Clientraw files of your ftp server, and displays them not unlike WDL does? That would make me happy!

As far I know, Iphone and other mobile phones doesn’t support flash, but Javascript, so you can make an ajax page. I did this for my site:

WDL version:

http://www.casacota.cat/teranyina?num=1211638813

Iphone / PDA version:

http://www.casacota.cat/teranyina?num=1213117810

Since I have a WS-2305 wireless, the updates are only every minute in both cases.

that is true, and thats why it would be nice with an iPhone app that got the values from the clientraw files already on the web server, and displayed some of them like temp, rain, wind etc with nice graphics, gauges, bars whatever. As there is a SDK for iPhone, I imagine that it would not be to hard for someone familiar with programming, not to mention the developers of WD and WDL, just make an app that asks for the address for where the clientraw files are, and which measurements that we would like to se… and maybe the records page, would be really nice!!

Don’t iphone apps sell for about $999?

It is possible to make an WDL almost clone in Ajax. On the other side, how to pack all the dials to fit on such a small display? And how about the mobile internet bandwidth costs in some countries? Where I live this would be a ruin… that’s the reason to make minimalist PDA pages.

Ajax is not very difficult, there are around several packs with all functions, and also template pages that can read clientraw.txt files. This has the advantage that the result can run also on other machines than Iphone, as every web application should be. I’m shure it is only a time question until such scripts will be available.

I read that iPhone users weren’t interested in the weather. Something about the battery life didn’t last long enough to track a good storm.

The SDK is actually free, though I suppose you need an iPhone to play with if you are going to develop with it. To distribute the resulting so applications costs $99 to sign up and it is sold through iTunes. You don’t have to charge for the apps you distribute from the store though which might make your app more popular.

Not bad for a iPhone user I guess… as long as your app doesn’t end up on the blacklist and gets shut off.

Check this out…

I’m sure there are going to be a number of weather display apps, but he was asking for…

Depends on who did the work for that app if they might be interested in creating a link to use it the way he is asking. I’m guessing it might not be of interest to them. Who knows though. someone else might come along that has a station, an iPhone and the development skill to put them together.

in NZ, the contract you have to sign, for 2 years, costs as much as the phone itself…
cant see that my financial manager would let me have one…“what would you need that for!?”

In Norway you can buy your way out of the contract (the contract is only for 1 year, restricted by law), and then the total price for Iphone is in the same price range as a HTC, Nokia or Sony Ericsson smart phone, and you get a iPod Touch included in the iPhone, so to me it is a good buy. The phone actually work very well, battery could be better, but it is much more used than a regular phone anyway.

Stil think a iPhone app that can display a few measurements and records read from the clientraw files available on the web servers where people have their WD or WDL websites would be nice

the MyWeather app http://www.myweather.com/iphone/index.html shows that there are no problem displaying a lot of weather information in the iphone screen, someone with the right skills “only” has to do the job. iPhone apps often sells for 1-6$ or somewhere around there, or are distributed for free. Some might see it as some kind of way to adverties for the heavier more expensive product, like WD and WDL

Getting an app built for the iPhone in the manner you are looking for will most likely happen under 1 of 2 circumstances…

  1. someone owning an iPhone that also uses WD with the skills to build the app, creates one because they have the time and energy to do so.

  2. someone sees a market large enough for this type of application to go to the trouble, time and expense to build an app to do this as a viable product.

I think #1 is more likely as I think if you did a poll of existing WD users you most likely won’t find too many that have opted for the iPhone.

I think you would find phones with Windows Mobile as the platform have a much higher usage amoung WD users and their are plentiful tools and much easier distribution opportunities for that type of platform.

In the existing WM platform there are already a number of weather applications which could be adapted with little work to do what you are looking for… I’ve actually talked with 2 of them about doing just this sort of thing. Both were somewhat interested at the time but had other commitments and projects that were higher up their priority lists… of course I wasn’t offering any $$$$ which would have most likely changed at least one of their minds.

I contemplated writing my own (I have all of the development tools) at one time, but its not a priority for me either as I can simply point my WM device to my own website to get the info that I am interested in with no phone development.

I suspect you will find that creating your own mobile website that you can use your existing iPhone browser might be a lot easier to achieve and accomplish and doable yourself.

I have suggested to my Son that it might be a cool thing for him to spend some time playing with the development tools as he has the aptitude, access to the tools and more importantly, the time, to do so, but is more concentrated right now on graphical pursuits and playing and developing video games instead.

Maybe the WD staff could make a poll then, it’s possible that there are more than me out there that has a weatherstation, a site on the web, AND the desire to se my weatherdata on an iPhone as a application. I’m in!

I have the new LG DARE phone on Verizon, and it works just fine and dandy pointed to my web site. Adjax updates in real time and all. So, it would be minor to create a webpage for the size of that screen and actually have real time updates to boot.
My 2 cents.

I was tempted to write one, but finally I did http://mobile.casacota.cat trying to make a page that works for as much phones as possible, and also in mind that actually the Nokia phones are the preferred ones for outdoor people that could need actual weather information, the new models have integrated GPS, huge batterie capacities, and Nokia owns a patent to use the internal antennas and electronics to act also as a portable lightning detector, so probably the interest for weather and outdoor freaks will be more on Nokia than Apple.

I did add the poll Poll - Realtime weather for the iphone

let’s hope that more that me thinks this would be nice then, my vote is in

Not impressive so far, 60 views but only 20 votes, 5 are interested, only 2 would pay anything for it.

no, not impressive :frowning: wish there would be more thinking this would be slick… but maybe the combo iPhone / weatherstation is not usually a match… ? we’ll see

I would love it – IF I could use an IPhone. Unfortunately, AT&T only offers landline in my part of Kansas, no wireless.

That darn AT&T, my cell doesn’t work at home. I do wish there was a way to set up call forwarding when the phone is off the network :frowning:
