Wanted WGR800X wind sensor for WMR200

After many years of use, having replaced the rain gauge and the UV sensor, I finally have no wind direction on my WMR200, so it looks like I need to replace the WGR800X wind sensor (combined anemometer and weather vane). However, this part is no longer commercially available.

I see 3 choices here:-

  1. My weather website has been around for quite some time now (since Jan 2005) gathering statistics and compiling a database - I could shut it down and give up
  2. I could buy a new weather station and hope that it is compatible with my Weather Display s/w, my database, my website and its Saratoga Weather and its Carterlake components
  3. I could appeal to my fellow weather enthusiasts to see if anyone has a WGR800X wind sensor that they know for sure is still working properly and that they would be willing to sell to me

That last option would be my favourite - so good people: anyone have one to sell (I’m in the UK by the way)?

If I can’t find one then has anyone any suggestion as to a replacement weather station that would work with Weather Display 10.37P?

Best Regards
Steve

I can’t help with a replacement part. I think my last OS station died about 15 years ago so I don’t have any spare parts left now.

Is there a reason why you want to find a station that works with WD 10.37P? There are plenty out there that work with the current version and you should be able to upgrade fairly easily just by installing the current version.

Windows XP? I think 10.37S120 (still available for download) works with XP, but there have been many changes to WD for, e.g., Ecowitt stations since then. . .

P.S. I can’t help with a replacement, either, sorry. I did replace the anemo three years ago because the original cup bearing was getting “sticky”. I kept the original as a spare, maybe I’ll buy a new bearing at Oregon Scientific Spare Parts

Yes, though it’s not simple to explain, but I’ll have a go

  1. My s/w runs on a dedicated low power FITPC machine running Windows XP.
  2. The website has a mechanism for users to subscribe to receive weather emails and this involves additional s/w on the PC to edit the registry settings for WD to add/subtract to the list of people who will receive emails
  3. Last time I changed versions of WD and at the same time changed by weather station, the Database layout changed so I had to make significant changes to additional web pages that enable the user to assemble a complex query. I needed to provide options to show where the databases did NOT overlap so that if certain fields were selected then only one database would be queried whereas with most fields I could query both databases and merge the results
  4. I use template PHP scripts from Caterlake.org and Saratoga Weather.org and last time my NAS auto-updated PHP I had to pull down fresh copies of those scripts that would support the updated PHP and there were a mass of changes I had to make because the SQL calls had all changed and certain parts of those scripts simply didn’t work any more and it took a large amount of work to figure it all out.

So essentially, I’m wanting to continue to use my dedicated Windows XP PC, and avoid having to rebuild my website. If I can buy another weather station, upgrade the WD s/w (but still run it on XP), and the data sent to the web site still be compatible with what I’ve got in place with minimal effort on my part (i.e. I don’t want to have to go get fresh copies of the Caterlake and Saratoga stuff that probably won’t just drop in there and work). Then I’d probably go that way.

However, if all I can see is weeks of work then I really can’t face doing that and would likely either give up or tolerate having no wind direction data in my system. I’ve always been a perfectionist so it hurts to not have that data - I have to ask myself which hurts more: that or just giving up.

Thanks very much for your reply.

Yes - Windows XP is a key part of the problem.

I did try that website too - it seems that most places can replace the rain gauge or the UV sensor but not the other components. I noticed that the weather vane has taken a hit and there’s a small piece broken off. My brother who has similar kit and is good at mending stuff reckoned that the component at the internal end of the weather vane has probably corroded and dropped off and fallen into the bottom of the unit. Whether that would be repairable or not I wouldn’t know, but I would rather replace it - it’s quite a strain at my age getting the ladders out to climb onto the roof of the house where this stuff is located, so I’d rather only do it once and the only way to guarantee doing it just the once is to replace the unit
