UK Air Quality Index

Brian here in the UK we use a different set of values for AQI and I am asking if we could have some custom tags to provide UK values for AQI and the various levels used. There is a page at https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/air-pollution/daqi?view=more-info&pollutant=pm25#pollutant which gives the various boundaries for AQI in the UK against the various pollutant types. Obviously as I only have PM2.5 measurements that is my main request, although the PM10 might be useful for others with different sensors. Could we please have a PM2.5 UK AQI tag based on the DEFRA boundaries. The UK uses both 60 minute and 24 hour rolling averages so I think those tags are fine.

Stuart

was it ever determined if the PM2.5 value supplied by the ecowitt data is a 60 minute rolling average?

As far as I’m aware you only get a 24 hour rolling average for PM2.5, at least that’s the only average I’ve seen in the API documentation. The current custom tags for PM2.5 are all just fine, the only one that could be added is the UK AQI value as the current AQ Index tag does not equate to the UK boundaries or index values which are documented in the DEFRA website I referred to earlier.

Stuart

Edit: Having just reviewed the custom tags again perhaps a UK AQI description as well in line the with the UK AQ index value.

Just a thought:

This is a difficult road to go as there are a very large number of ug/m3 to index calculations.
Most used and understood world-wide: EPA, originally the USA one.
There is also the European one, EEA, used in all reports in the EU as they include more then 1 country.
Large countries have their “own” index calculation, often for “political” reasons to “enhance” (=lower) the calculated index.

No idea why small neighbouring countries also use their own different calculations, such as Belgium and the Netherlands do.
I can not compare the official BE-AQI with the NL-AQI a few miles up north.
The temperatures, pressure and windspeed in my area I can compare and the values do not differ that m uch.
But the Dutch “moderate AQ” and my local Belgium “good AQ” for nearly the same ug/m3 is unexplainable.

Yes there are as many arguments about AQ and AQI as there are countries. Just living in the UK I want to put UK version on my website as the UK does have its own boundaries for AQI. We are after all no longer part of the EU    #-o

Stuart

i might open a can of worms?
i,e other countries might want their own?
are you able to do what you need via php script on your web site using the current pm2.5 tag?

Yes,
Yes,
Yes, a user can do that for himself or post the calculation in php for other local users.

F.i. my AQI definitions are in a stand-alone script here https://leuven-template.eu/luftdaten/ws_luftdaten1.php?sce=view
Function to calculate for any AQI is at line 600-620
Calculating the AQI is the small part of the job.

The tables for the levels, colours a.s.o. are below that.
Finding the levels, descriptions and all other things is the large part.
And the user need to do that anyway on its own website.

Wim

As Wim says

Yes, yes & yes. In fact I do right now because I was having issues with the PM2.5 readings earlier from WD (crowgw1000 has fixed all that now). Now I can rely on the PM2.5 readings, 60 min and 24 hr averages I can use those and set the values accordingly.

I was suggesting it for others who may not be able to code php as well as me being perhaps a tad lazy

The PM2.5 24 hour average is actually provided in the API by the GW1000 so even that does not need WD to do any calculations, however the 60 minute average is not in the API so does need WD to calculate that. Watching the API 24 hr avg and the WD one they track very well as would be expected.
