Twitter Mobile - Weird Display

Sorry to be a pest, but just another quick question.

Now that I have twitter up and running it seems some characters are missing or incorrectly displayed on mobile devices

This is the WD code to generate the twitter feed:

%time% %metarcloudreport% & %weathercond% sitting @ %temp% with %hum%% humidity. Winds are %avgspd% from the %dirlabel%. Total 24hr rain %totalrainlast24hours%

And this is what my web based twitter feed looks like

VaughanWxUpdates
1:00 PM mostly cloudy & Dry sitting @ 22.5

Just discovered it seems to only be happening through the default twitter client for mobile devices, the mobile website works fine & other clients such as tweetdeck mobile & desktop work just fine too.

Now I’m scratching my head!!! LOL

Tom

Obviously a Twitter and Twitter Client issue…

It seems the problem stems from the humidity % symbol and the temperature

Hi Tom,

Looks like the same issue as in this old thread: -

Nobody has ever been able to solve it - the strange thing is that Cumulus Twitter feeds work ok, it only seems to be a problem with Weather Dispay, and only on iPhone/iPad Twitter apps.

It’s annoying but WD is so useful in so many other ways that I’ve just learnt to live with it, by deleting the offending characters.

Simon

Thanks Simon,

That thread was exactly the same thing I was encountering. I followed the instructions to turn off the units and everything is working fine now.

Tom

Does anyone know if there is a way to get the location to display with twitter?

For example can I set WD to send location data to twitter with each tweet? That way people can get geo-reference data when they do area searches, etc.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Again Cumulus does this but WD does not - you’ll have to ask Brian why. Maybe something to do with the Twitter API WD uses?

Regards,

Simon

Thanks for the input Simon,

You’ve been a great help!

Tom

Spireweather, Vaughan weather was able to get the units problem fixed
so you should be able to as well, yes?

as for the location, that must be a certain data variable added to the tweets
does anyone know anything about how that works?

Hi Brian, about two thirds down the page it speaks about how the API works - this is what you need to know https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/post/geo/place

I got around the weird letters and symbols coming up with the degree sign but when I put a % behind the %hum% tag in WD the jibberish still came up so I just used dew point instead.

Tom

Bwah oops wrong link, this is how you embed location in POST data, not GET then POST data…

https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/post/account/update_profile ← again halfway down the page

Tom

make sure you do not have %hum% %
in the twitter setup
the custom tag %hum% does not add a % symbol

The only way I (& others) have been able to get around this problem (only affecting Twitter on iOS devices) is to set not to show units, and in the Twitter string use “C” rather than "

so its not a problem after making those changes?

Only in that we can’t include the degree or percentage symbols because they don’t display properly within iOS applications. I can live with it.

Not to my knowledge no. Like Simon said, it’s just when you put the
