Tom I am trying to understand where WXSim gets all its data from collected by WXSimate. I thought it was in the file created by WXSimate called 'data.txt. However I thought I’d try not downloading the SYNOP data since currently I’m using METARs for forecasting. However when I look at the 'data.txt file when I dont download SYNOP it contains only buoy data, GFS model data and RAOB data, I can see no METAR data in there at all. Does WXSim use one of the other files created by WXSimate to gather the METAR data? Since my forecasts seem quite good there must be some data somewhere which WXSim is using!
Stuart
Hi Stuart,
First, be sure that the data file you’re looking at is exactly the one you are creating with WXSIMATE (it probably is, but I just want to make absolutely sure). Next, make sure METAR is checked in WXSIM, BUT make sure that the “Extended METAR” box is NOT checked. That kind of METAR is only in the U.S. In other words, don’t overly restrict it. Next, make sure there is a fresh metar.lst file after you attempt to create a data file. The “.lst” files are the raw data resulting from the download. The file metcull.txt is a culled version of that, using only data relevant to you.
Hope that helps!
Tom
Tom I am absolutely sure that the 'data.txt file is the one which has been built by WXSimate. Yes I do have a fully populated metar.lst file, what I cannot see directly is any of the raw data from the metar.lst file in the 'data.txt file. When WXSimate does its cull does it alter the data or re-format it in any way, or does it simply copy over the relevant metars? I do have a file called cullmet.txt which is empty!
Stuart
OK so now I have turned off Extended Metar I am getting metar data in the 'data.txt file. #-o #-o
I had not noticed that check box was ticked, you may remember some time ago I reported a funny with the way that part of the screen shows on my system which makes the check box very unclear. Anyway now it is un-ticked I have my metar data OK!
Maybe I’ll get better forecasts now
, although they have not been that bad recently
Stuart
Hi Stuart,
I’m glad that did the trick!
