Thinking off buying the Davis Vantage Vue?

My old oregon scientific wmr100 has done its glory days, and I think its time for an upgrade.
Was recomended a Davis Vantage Vue? And a serial weatherlink`, was more stabel than the usb weatherlink i got told?

Some questions:

  1. Is this a good station for the price? Better Than WMR200? Any other station recomandations?

  2. Will it work nice with weather display and weather display live?

  3. Is the serial or the usb the way to go?

  4. If serial would you recomend a good serial to usb converter , or shoul i go with a pci serial card?

Hope somebody has some good advices

  1. Yes, good Davis quality, much better than O.S. products. But the sensors are integrated. If you need to split the sensors get VP2+.
  2. Yes.
  3. I use USB on my Mac with no issues. Serial on the PC is bullet-proof.
  4. If it were me I would go the converter route.

Thanks for the info.

Any recommended shops in the US to buy from? It costs twice as much in Europe, than in the US.

My only concerne is the power output ? Does it come in 230V i the US? Or 110?

Beware, if you live in Europe. The Transmitter Frequency used in the USA model is NOT approved for use within EU countries…

The console runs on a plug style transformer, my (UK) one says input 200-240v so I suppose the US version might not work here.
(Apart from the different style plug which is solvable)
You could run on batteries though, three C type are supposed to last at least a year.

Okei, thanks for the advice, might be better to just pick one up her in Norway then… To be safe, will be better when coming to warranty and stuff aswell.

Any other thougts on the USB - Seriell ? What to choose there? Anyone no a good seriell to usb converter that for sure works good with the davis?

the problems with the USB data logger do seem to be over with the latest driver for that

okei, sounds promissing, but if you run serial it would be more bulletproof? Guranteed?

yes, in my opinion, and from experience of users

Really, I got mine for E325. I googled a bit and didn’t see prices of $165, more in the $300 price range.
How much is it in Norway?

Expensive country :stuck_out_tongue:

800 dollar with shipping and weatherlink serial. I also got a discount, so it was even more expensive.

Given the problems I have had with my davis vantage pro2 quality wise I would go anywhere near a davis product see my post.
You want to try buying the product in New Zealand about $1700NZ
Only one agent in NZ from what I can tell who knows how to charge and not provide service

I also have been looking into getting a Davis or a Peet unit. I am going to use Weather-Display as my software.

So just so I know what I am up against, with the davis I dont have to buy a console I can get a

6357 Vantage Vue Intergrated Sensor suite
6316 Wireless Weather Envoy
and I also have to get a 6510SER (serial type weatherlink)

Is that correct? Doing it this way I can add say a leaf moisture sensor later and say perhaps a solar sensor.

I don’t know where in the world you are, but at least in the U.S. a Vue ISS + Envoy will cost you more than a complete Vue so you would pay more for less functionality, and you can’t AFAIK add a solar to a Vue, you need a VP2 ISS for that.

So I can say use a complete vp2 with a serial weatherlink? I dont then need an envoy?

I originally was set on a peet unit but decided it would be nice to be able to have solar etc and I found the peets didnt even have the basics. Very confused now. I hate it when theres a huge amount of choice

Yes, the weatherlink unit fits in the back of the VP2 (or Vue) console, no need for an Envoy. The VP2 can add the solar (and UV) sensor which connect direct to the ISS. The leaf moisture is a separate wireless unit that communicates directly with the console. The advantage of the VP2 is that the anemometer is separate from the ISS so you have much better installation choices.
