tags for degree days

Hi Brian

(Long time, I know)

Had a request to add drgree days to my site.

hi
just doing some catch ups
is that growing degree days or heat degree days (as in the noaa report)>?

heating degree days.

But if Brian adds heating degree day/month/year (and cooling degree day) tags, there’ll hardly be any additional information I can get out of VWS that I can’t get out of WD!

ran out of time today to add this…
tomorrow hopefully, or the next day
and I need to do some other things i keep putting off too

%hddmonth%…Heating degree days month to date
%cddmonth%…Cooling degree days month to date
%hddday%…Heating degree days ,today
%cddday%…Cooling degree days ,today

just uploading a new 10.21x with those tags added
not sure how well they will work, as i am too warm to get any readings…

i will add them to my wap page as soon as i upgrade

The new degree day tags are not working for me. All four are showing 0.0 after several update cycles. 0.0 is correct for Cooling Degree Days but the HDD numbers should be spooling up quickly. If WD 1021x only starting accumulating data when I started it for the first time I should be seeing around 1.2 already. If 1021x actually goes back and calculates from midnight I should be seeing about 13.5.

Update: Still all 0.0 after 3 hours of operation. Just thought I should check to be sure there isn’t a tick box some where I have to set to enable this.

ok, now, I need some data to work with, LOL
zip and email me your data file month12005.inf and your log file 12005lg.txt (so i compare to it working in the Noaa report under view, averages/extreme)
thanks

The data’s in the mail.

Seems to me that if we are going to start making CDD and HDD available more readily, we need to decide how it is to be computed. Some simply take average temp for day and compare it to a heating or cooling threshold and so calculate it only at day end. Other (I am one) think it should be calculated on a minute by minute, or at least hourly, basis and accumulated to have any real value. After all, if there is a single hour of un-holy heat or cold, then the HVAC system has to deal with that spike, not the average temp of the day.

One man’s opinion.

Fred

hi
yes, once i have this working OK, it will be computed at the minute / time you run that custom tag…

try a new 10.21x download in about 1 hour from now, it is fixed , at least with Chaz’s data

Brian,
I downloaded the most recent 10.21x. The hdd tags seem OK, though I didn’t check to see that they increment properly. But the cdd has a problem.

%cddday% shows same value as %hddday% (32), and %cddmonth% has a larger negative value. I beleive that with the temps here staying below freezing all day, there should be a zero value for cddday, and since it has not gotten up to even 50 deg F this month, cddmonth too should be zero.

I am not sure I understand how these degree day valuse are being calculated. Do you calculate heating / cooling degree minutes for each minute based on average tmep that minute, accumulate those , and divide by the number of minutes so far that day? Or do you just compare current temp to average temp so far that day and call that the degree days for the day?

Fred

Fred,

What values do you have for HDD Day and Month? If I were firing up the WD version that “fixes” HDD right now I would probably think my reading of 32.0 for HDD Day was about right, too. However, it read 32.0 when I first fired it up early this morning and it hasn’t incremented since. The HDD Month reading hasn’t changed all day either. And I am seeing the same behavior with CDD that you noted.

7pm 31 Jan
hdd 32.0 today, 1496.8 month
cdd 32.0 today, -1432.8 month

8am 1 Feb
hdd 32.0 today, 128.7 month
cdd 32.0 today, -64.7 month

1130am 1 feb
hdd 32.0 today, 129.3 month
cdd 32.0 today, -65.3 month

Fred

Fred: Even though the actual value of HDD month is different, it changed for me approx the same amount as yours between the first and second times I checked it today. It hasn’t changed again since. And I still get 32.0 for all three of the other readings!

i have done some more work, 10.22 should be much better

Alas, I am in Las Vegas on business for the rest of the week. Tough job, but somebody has to do it. So I’ll have to catch up with you on Saturday somewhere around 10.22d ;> And wouldn’t you know it, WD has been reliable for me of late but it seems to have stopped updating my website about the time I was leaving for the airport. Have to see if I can get my son to restart for me tomorrow when he gets home from school!

Brian,
1305EST 2 Feb
hdd 32.0 today, 77.6 month
cdd 32.0 today, 32.0 month
min temp 8.1 deg F @ 0628
max temp 35.6 deg F @ 1409

not quite there yet.

Fred
