Sub-domains with redirection/masking - any interest?

I’m about to move Weather-Watch.com to a new server and the recent discussion about free domains set me thinking. There’s no reason why I couldn’t make redirecting sub-domains available on the new server.

Would anyone be interested in sub-domain off weather-watch.com, for weather related sites, redirected to your own web site with your own web site URL masked. The service would be free and wouldn’t have any ads or popups. You’d be able to register and maintain your own sub-domains, although I’d probably approve any submissions.

So you could have an address like…

http://nz-weather.weather-watch.com

which would point at your web site…

myisp.com

If you’d like to see the kind of thinq I mean, try the following links (which will only work for the next few days).

http://manukau-nz.master-dns.com
http://blackpool.master-dns.com

It will be a couple of weeks before I could make this available. I need to get my domains migrated to the new server first…including the weather-watch.com domain and this forum!

Please let me know what you think by voting…

Sure, why not?

I could be www.Coventry.weather-watch.com
Instead of http://www.CoventryWeather.tk

and certainly better than
http://members.cox.net/yarborough1/weather/weatherpage.htm

I think that is an excellant idea Chris !! , I also note the Blackpool weather has’nt improved in 35 years !!

It never changes much, although unlike many people here we don’t get real extremes…although it sometimes seems like it.

Since moving into this house I’ve realised how powerful the wind is here at times. My previous homes have all been fairly sheltered from the West by other houses. This house is one of the highest in the mid to south of the town (with views of the hills 30-50 miles away from my loft window). As my computers are in the loft I really notice the effect of wind gusts when I’m working on them. The whole loft was shuddering very heavily yesterday evening as the 30-40mph gusts were buffeting it.

would this “hide” my actual site from the world? but still allow access to view it through this redirection?

All it hides is that you don’t see the actual URL in the browser address line, look at Herb’s .tk example. If you look at the source you’ll see the real URL.

It’s a nice convenience that allows you to use a freebie webpage that you get from your ISP (usually comes with a very complex URL) with a simple URL.

Yeah, it’s almost hidden, except for techies like us that know something
about html source code. Majority of internet users don’t even know what
“View Source” means.

my “www” profile button is pointed at the CoventryWeather.tk site

I wish I didn't. Everytime I go to a site, wonder how did they do that, and I view the source, it makes a thought pop in my head.

There has to more to life, than this.

Chris

... it makes a thought pop in my head.
This could actually be a good thing, Chris.

Nice one! I can believe I walked into that one. Herb, you zinged me, and I have loved it.

It would hide your site if accessed via the new URL, but if people knew the ‘hidden’ URL they could still access it directly.

Chris, (the administrator without an eye patch)

I’m amazed that, so far, 30% state that they don’t understand the question.

Is is worth trying to explain this better, or are you just going to ride it out?
Or do you think they vote before reading the thread and then get examples
and claritfication? Is there a way to change a vote?

I didn’t realise that there was another administrator with an eye patch

Herb

I don’t think there’s a way to push the vote below the explanation.

I’ve been wondering how to explain it better. I think part of the problem is that my working examples use one of my other ‘not normally for public viewing’ domain names, so people might be wondering what’s so good about having london.master-dns.com as a weather site. Perhaps it will make more sense once I get weather-watch.com migrated to the new server and people can see some real examples.

On the grounds that more than one person has voted YES I’ll probably add the bit of code needed to make this work and then I can see how it grows once people can use it for real.

Alternatively…perhaps someone who knows what I mean can find a different way of explaining this that might make more sense. I don’t claim to be the world’s best communicator…I am afterall just a nerd/geek/technophile/BOFH/ :robot: (delete as appropriate…or not!)

The Chris with eye patch is an administrator. He is the administrator of Chatter. He must be, since he has more overall posts than you.

Glad to see that you will be pushing ahead with the redirection of sub-domains in the future.

Herb

I am sure more people will “understand” when you actually have it so you can have an address like

http://nz-weather.weather-watch.com

That is functional. As they say, a click is worth a thousand words.

Yes, my job is to make sure that nothing intelligent, thought provoking or interesting gets discussed here. Also I try to lower the standards of good taste, and make it and "R" forum.

Sigh, I think I need to get a life.

I have to say that so far he’s done a fine job  but may be in danger of losing the initiative now we have WD websites promoting interesting pictures http://quetzal.altervista.org and viagra http://www.f1fun.com/idweather.html listed in the weather websites section.

websites promoting interesting pictures
This is great news. Now if my girlfriend catches me surfing some of those sites, I can say, I don't know HOW I got here, the last thing I knew I was looking at weather sites. :lilangel:

I am kidding of course… I don’t have a girlfriend. 8O

Chris

Naw…he’s just Head of Communications.

Head of Communications. That is what it looks like.
