I have been running the Oregon Scientific WMR 200 for about 5 years now. I know it is not the best station but until it is economically feasible (wife lets me) to replace the unit with better one I am trying to make this work. Only major issue I have had is the damn rain gauge. I am on my second one and this one also stopped sending signals. Been through all the standard fix protocols and then some. I would like to replace it with a standalone one supported by WD! Anyone have any recommendations? I did a forum search and was not able to find any other posts. If there is a thread send me there. Target price range would be under $75. Thanks
I never got around to trying this one but maybe it will work for you…
I have used this one and found it to be very accurate…
Thanks Dan. I actually have 2 of the second ones you mention! Those ALWAYS work. Only issue is that I have to manually add the data to WD. A few contractor friends of mine use my monthly reports to track the amount of rain days per month. So having rain entered automatically makes my life easier.
I recommend the Ecowitt GW1000 paired with the WH40 rain gauge. Total cost $67.
This is supported by WD. (or run it independently without WD and just report to WU, Ecowitt.net, PWSweather, and WeatherClould which the GW1000 can do itself).
GW1000 $30

WH40 Rain Gauge $37

Now even though this above solution would work…I think you’d be better off replacing the whole WMR200. It isn’t much more to have a complete station. There are many ways to go. The key thing is to know that you’ll need the Ecowitt GW1000 no matter what with all these combinations (for WD compatibility). I’ll go best to most economical.
Ecowitt GW1000 with an Ambient WS-2000 ($30 + $213 = $243)
Ecowitt GW1000 with an Ambient WS-2902A ($30 + $130 = $160)
But see here why WS-2000 is much better than WS-2902A:
Ecowitt GW1000 with an Ambient WS-1900 ($30 + $107 = $137)
(the WS-1900 has no Internet capability…but that doesn’t matter as you’ll use the GW1000 to get you connected…you’ll just miss out on not having Ambientweather.net)
There are other combinations as you could get any of these from Ecowitt and just be sure to add the GW1000:
The GW1001 comes with a GW1000 and an outdoor sensor array…it is like getting a GW1000 + Ambient WS-1900 …minus not having that extra display…but for the price that is why I recommend GW1000 with WS-1900 as cheapest solution. Its like getting a free display.
I know you say you need approval from the boss for a new station…but as you can see it doesn’t need to break the bank.
You can start off with any of these combinations also and then later add the outdoor complete sensor array or extra sensors, like if you start with the separate rain gauge. But its cheaper to start off with what you’ll need/want eventually.
Just keep in mind the following rules:
Ecowitt console with Ambient sensors = Okay works!
Ambient console with Ecowitt sensors = No good…does not work! (exception here too…the separate Ecowitt WH40 rain gauge overrides the station’s all-in-one rain gauge and is the only known Ecowitt sensor that works with an Ambient console. Meaning the extra temp/hum from Ecowitt does not work with Ambient console)
Which means you can’t buy an Ambient WS-2000 and then add Ecowitt extra sensors like their PM2.5 or their soil moisture…etc. Sure those sensors will show up on the GW1000 but they won’t show up on the WS-2000. Now you could get the PM2.5 from Ambient and then both the WS-2000 and the GW1000 will see it. This doesn’t mean that Ecowitt is better than Ambient. Because Ambient consoles have something that Ecowitt consoles don’t have. Only an Ambient console can connect to Ambientweather.net (* with 1 exception). A reason to want Ambientweather.net is so that you can take advantage of some things that are not offered by Ecowitt.net: Amazon Alexa integration, Google Assistant, network API for other software, easy station data sharing (Ecowitt.net doesn’t have any of these things). If you have a GW1000 and an Ambient console then you can have both Ambientweather.net and Ecowitt.net. I’m not saying Ambient consoles are better either as Ecowitt.net looks nicer. The 1 exception to Ambientweather.net is that you can upload to them without an Ambient console only if you also get a Meteobridge and license it to also have the Ambientweather.net license ($150)…it’s expensive but doable…only mention it for completeness.
Lots of great info here to digest. THANKS!
I was going to just do the GW1000 and the WH40 but more I read the more I like the idea of the GW 1000 and the WS 2000. Silly question
WD gets the data via the GW1000 hub over your wifi/lan (the GW1000 then gets the data from the weather station sensors (handles lots of different models too))

galfert
So I ended up for now going with the W1000 paired with the WH40 rain gauge option. Got everything hooked up and the app works. rain gauge is syncd with the w1000 and the app. but when I try and use the W1000 for rain in Weather display I get all kinds of crazy readings when I click on the enabled button and use station rain total. See attached screenshot. I got the IP address from the app on my phone . Any ideas what I am doing wrong here? under the oregon scientific tab I still have WMR200 USB checked
Also Weather Display keeps updating my annual rain to 168 inches. when it is only 36. Screen shot of what W1000 is also attached
I do have not have where you can mix and match the rain gauge reading from a GW1000 with another weather station type
that is the first problem
the second problem is for some reason the WD crongw1000 program is not picking up your rain data correctly
do you only have a rain guage, and not a full weather station?
I’ll let Brian weigh in but I don’t think WD supports your Oregon and the GW1000 at the same time.
EDIT: ha too funny …we cross posted. Thank you Brian for confirmation about supporting both at the same time.
even if WD did, the main problem is its not picking up the rain data correctly
have you setup the app that comes with the GW1000 …does that show the rain guage sensor?
ah crap. then I misunderstood. That was what I was trying to do. Keep WMR and just replace the crappy rain gauge!
For the GW1000…just a rain gauge
So looks like I totally misunderstood your direction. I assumed that the original suggestion was a way to use the WMR200 and just add the WH40.
So looks like I am still down a gauge for tracking rain in Weather Display. But I will not look to either add more Ecowitt sensors to the GW1000 or go the route of Ambient WS-2000
have you setup the app that comes with the GW1000 …does that show the rain guage sensor?
Yes. I just did a reset on the sensor (pulled battery) and GW1000 (unplugged from USB) per ecowitt instructions. Lucky me it just started raining!! I now appears to be recording in the app. Updated screenshot attached
and so does the WD cron program see the rain data values correct now?
How can I tell? I disabled the setting to enable Ecowitt GW1000 since I thought I can only do one or the other (GW1000 or WMR 200). Also each time I enabled it I got very odd data. Winds over 124mph, 258 inches of rain!
you would need to run the crongw1000.exe program (with WD not set to use that)
and see what shows in that program for rain data now that you have the GW1000 actaully set to get the rain data
So I found that and ran it and it still pulled in some crazy data. See attached. I have no idea where it is coming from
its only reporting what is in the raw data
which is NULL data (i.e 255 values)
