Solar % thresholds and descriptions

I have a Davis VP2 wireless with solar and UV sensors. Everything is working just fine. My question is to do with the solar percentage thresholds and their associated descriptions. I read the wiki article here http://weather-watch.com/wiki/index.php/Solar_Sensor_Setup. Is this the “official” standard that we should all be sticking to for consistency in data? Currently I’m using the following percentages and descriptions:

75% Sunny
45% Mostly Sunny
25% Mostly Cloudy
6% Cloudy
<2% Night Time

Being a “glass half full” rather than a “glass half empty” sort of a guy  I’m opting to use “mostly sunny”, rather than the wiki-suggested “partly cloudy” description for >45%. My thresholds are also quite different to the wiki (I can’t recall why I opted for these particular thresholds). However, as these values and descriptions impact on which weather icon (and in my case my site’s banner image) is displayed, I figure it’s reasonably important that the WD community uses consistent percentages and descriptions.

Thoughts anyone?

Simon

Simon,
Gidday from Rangiora … just up the road …
I’m having the same challenges.
Setup a new Davis 6163 unit, and all sorts of challenges getting the readings correct.
Like today … A sunny day, but WD reading Mainly Cloudy/dry. Was reading Gloomy!!!
Can you post a screen shot of your current solar setup?
Thanks in adv,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Nice to hear from a local Kiwi. Attached is a snap of my solar sensor setup.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

You may wish to read through this thread started by Stuart (Broadstairs)…

Hi munrobaggins,

Many thanks for the pointer. I’ve read through it and added my own 2 Cents worth to the thread if you are interested.

Cheers,

Simon

Paul, make sure you have your lat/long set correctly in the solar setup and have set to use the solar max for lat/long etc
