setting barometer offset

Will someone explain to me in plain English how I am supposed to adjust my barometer reading? My Baro reads 30.10 inches and I need it to read 30.20 inches. This offset thing spikes it all over the place. Why does all of this have to be so difficult? It seems like there is always two or sometimes even three places in the menus to do the same function. I’ve yet to figure out how to enter in any offsets without it turning into a guessing game. What is the function of offsets& initial rain/barometer offset, versus units/ barometer offset?

I have always found that this type of offset is better to do in Weatherlink, the program provided by Davis - it then makes the offset appear on the console as well as in WD.

Open Weather link and click on setup and then on Barometer offset and make your adjustments there.

Thanks for the tip! It just seems to be a shame that we have to resort to another completely different software program to do something as simple as adjusting the barometer offset. But then I am not a software guy… #-o

What station do you have Flying V?

Niko, I have a Davis VP2.

Me too. Do you have the altitude set correctly on the console? For the VP WD uses the altitude/sea level adjusted value it gets from the console.

How to calibrate the VP2 baro, from the console manual:

Thanks for the good info. I do have the station altitude set correctly. It is tracking nicely with other stations nearby in trends but it had a slight offset that needed to be input as it has been several years since I had done a console calibration and it was reading a bit low consistently. I just wish that the WD interface was a little easier to understand for simple tasks such as this. I’ve been using the software for about two weeks and it has great stability and nearly unlimited capabilities, but the interface to set up and adjust things on the fly is very awkward for me at the moment. I use this software for research and I need to be as accurate as possible in my measurements.

WD’s baro offset is mostly used (AFAIK) to do the altitude adjustment for stations that supply a raw, non-adjusted, baro value. If you are convinced the VP is wrong I think it’s much better to calibrate the VP itself rather than have an offset in WD resulting in the console and WD showing different values.

What is the function of offsets& initial rain/barometer offset, versus units/ barometer offset?
they are the same

if you are setting rain totals in one place for first time use then why not be able to set the barometer offset in the same place
I really don’t understand why the complaint?

you can also set WD to use the VP atlimeter barometer reading, see in the control panel , CWOP setup, altimeter setup

Brian, the example that you pointed out is exactly my point. At least to me, it seems confusing to be able to set a single variable in several different places throughout the program. Since I am fairly new to your software, I was unaware that both menu items do the same thing because they are in different places in the program. For example, today I am running a calibration test of some ground movement sensors (my research project) and I needed to quickly set the barometer “on the fly” as I was recording my data from the sensors. Instead of just finding a single place to type in the corrected barometer value I see that there are two different spots to do that, as you have stated and I am totally confused. In fact I still don’t understand the method that you use to input offsets using the slider box in the menu. I ended up with several large swings in the calculated barometer value which completely invalidated my tests which resulted in 6 hours of data ruined in my research. I am not really complaining except to say that the user interface to correct and adjust variables is just not intuitive to me. Overall the software is very nice and I am very appreciative of your efforts, but the learning curve has been a real bear for me.
