Tom I know I have mentioned this before but WXSim usually misses sea fog for my location. Yesterday and today we are getting quite thick sea fog blowing in from the N Sea/English Channel on the NE wind but WXSim is saying 12 degrees and Mostly Cloudy but we get max of about 7 degrees and quite thick sea fog. This is not unusual at this time of year but can happen almost at any time of year even in summer if conditions are right. Is there any way that WXSim can make any worthwhile predictions for sea fog/mist?

Hi Stuart,
I have two ideas:
(1) Turn the fog sensitivity setting up, maybe even to 100. That certainly should increase the fog, though I don’t know if it will be by the right amount.
(2) Try the low stratus routine (under refinements, right there on the main page). I have to say that this is a holdover from the pre-model data (i.e. GFS) days and I was never quite satisfied with it (it was a bit “unstable” in that it could quickly go from no clouds to overcast, depending rather sensitively on conditions) Also, I don’t live near a coast where it’s more relevant, so I wasn’t able to test it well. I do believe one of my customers in coastal California had some luck with it. I actually would be interested to hear how it works, though! It’s not exactly fog, per se, but it is the lowest level of clouds WXSIM has, and probably has about the same effects on temperature.

Thanks Tom, I’ll have a play later and see what happens. Conditions are changing right now so it is becoming less likely so initially I’ll probably wait a while and have a play if conditions make it more likely.
