I’m looking at alternatives when I move to a VP2 from my current WMII. Right now, I’m running WD and WeatherLink together on a netbook (serial logger) and WD release the comport once a day to allow Weatherlink to download from the logger. It’s working very well.
If I were to use the WLIP logger, would this set up still be possible even if I turn off the WLIP uploads to weatherlink.com? I can’t see in the settings where there is an option to release the IP connection at a specified time like there is for the comport.
So, the “release connection every minute to allow weatherlink.com updates” will also allow the weatherlink program on the local computer to perform an archive download?
You’re right - to duplicate my current setup, I don’t need one. But, I was considering one for the following reasons:
-My current serial cable run is maybe 30-40 feet and I’m not 100% sure how well it will work with new data logger and faster baud rate (19200 vs 1200 baud). Probably a low risk but still.
-The IP setup is much more flexible. I have wired ethernet all over the house, so moving things would be easier.
-If my cheap netbook (my 24/7 computer) ever fails, I can turn on weatherlink uploading (and WU transfer) and avoid a long disruption
-Lastly, who knows, weatherlink.com may improve and be useful. Seems that there is some indication of graphing, etc being considered.
Thanks for that link. That looks very doable. I’m not sure that would have any of the other advantages of the WLIP, but it certainly addresses the ability of ethernet availability. Also, good to know about your current experience with the serial version. My situation should work fine with a serial version then.
