Having a bit of frustration here since I have updated to the new version of WXSIM 12.8.11 it will not transfer the ROAB data from WXMATE. WXSIM comes up with “no ROAB or TAA data found” and the three sites come up blank as well.
I had some posts under the WXSIM new version 12.8.11 topic, but have decided to try and generate a bit of interest by starting a new topic. I thought last night I had it nutted and I did another run this morning and again I have lost my ROAB data once more! Any help will be appreciated! Was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem in Australia or is it just me with a glitch in the system?
You might first look at raob.lst, and see if there’s anything in that file (and if the file date/time is frm your latest WXSIMATE run). If there’s a lot of data there, that means the site is responding, and WXSIMATE is getting it OK, but that the Australian sites it’s looking for didn’t report (at least not on time, to that data source). You can also change data sources in WXSIMATE. Scroll up or down in the RAOB text box and then click on one of the few other sites options.
Hi Tom,
Tried using another site rap.ucar (abbreviated) this afternoon and I now have my three ROAB sites up. Had been using met.fsu and while the roab.lst file was showing data from rap.ucar it mustn’t have had my three sites data in it. Will try again tomorrow morning using rap.ucar and see if it lets me have the correct data. Many thanks for your quick response, very much appreciated.
Just did a run this morning and the RAOB data is missing off all three locations in my WXMATE. So agree with PaulyA that there is something weird going on here with the Aussie data. I have checked the ROAB.lst file and it is full of data, my knowledge and what to look for is very limited so any help for us two would be appreciated. Not sure if the GFC has affected anything…
I have just downloaded the same data using DigitalAtmosphere software and tried to generate a sounding chart and it has wind values and no temperature or dewpoint for several of the previous days 12z data.
I have also downloaded from the other sources that DigitalAtmosphere has and they have returned the same problems. During the afternoon the ROAB (00z) data imports correctly into WXSim and the DigitalAtmosphere sounding charts have data in them, so I am starting to suspect it is BOM’s data that is causing the issue.
Either their data exports are going strange during the 12z run only and missing out the temp and dewpoint, or they are cutting costs and sending a balloon up without any radiosonde equipment and just tracking the wind. ???
The following (small sample) seem to have missing dewpoints and temps during the 12z run…
Sydney - 94767
Gove 94150
Brisbane - 94578
Cairns - 94287
Perth, Learmouth and Darwin seem to have all of the data during the 12z run…
I have been advised by BOM that due to “financial cutbacks” they will only be sending up one weather balloon at 00z, unless there are interesting periods of weather are forecast and then they will do the usual 12z and 00z balloons.
Hmmmmmm I think this is something we are going to have to get used to in WXSIM… Perhaps we need a check box in WXSIMATE saying 'Backwards country" and then it can take into account only one radiosonde!
+1 on a tick for backward country! Was tongue in cheek when I mentioned the GFC in my previous post - hit the nail right on the head. Looks like we’ll be doing forecasts at afternoon smoko!
A bit more info - yep only doing one balloon a day on my three sites, just found that they don’t send them up at the same time either. Moree’s (Aust) data isn’t there til later in the arvo - found the other two there just after midday. As Moree is the closest to me within (100km as the crow flies) means I’ll have to do my forecasts at afternoon smoko!
Sorry to hear about the buoy data cutbacks. That’s not good for anybody, as it compromises (I would think) the data going into the big models.
One bit of good news: RAOB data is really not critical to your WXSIM forecasts (it helps a bit, in the early part of the run, but makes very little difference after a few hours). so you can feel OK about running the program without it.
the latest data for roab at 16:10 gmt+10 from “https : //weather.cod.edu/digatmos/upa/” is 24080706.upa 2024-08-07 06:06 139K where wxsimate is looking for 24080712.upa.
