Tom thanks for the reply. One thing I found was that this url mentioned above http://weather.rap.ucar.edu/upper/current.rawins works when clicked from here but the link in WXSimate does not!

Possibly HTTP vs HTTPS? Clicking the link probably makes your browser convert to making an HTTPS call, but WxSimate probably isn’t doing that?
Yes very probably but unfortunately you cannot change what is in the WXSimate entry and I think it is hard coded in the program.
As Tom said he does not use SYNOP and RAOB provides very little extra so currently I am using neither.

Almost certainly. My comment was as much for Tom as for anyone else.
Looks like they have been advised to use authentication to get data which is why some links for raob etc are not working
