This topic was touched upon earlier, but I have noticed a few strange things when playing with my Trial Copy.
A) The actual web location for my WDLive page is
http://richardpreuss.tripod.com/wdisplay/wdlive.htm
B) Using my own URL, the same page is
http://preussweb.com/wdisplay/wdlive.htm or
http://www.preussweb.com/wdisplay/wdlive.htm (either works the same)
C) Using Tripod’s sub-domains, my weather station is at:
http://weather.preussweb.com (points to the wdisplay subdirectory at my web site) so the WDLive page is also at:
http://weather.preussweb.com/wdlive.htm
NOTE - There is only one occurrance of the web page. All these address point to that location! I FTP the source to ftp.tripod.com userid richardpreuss.
If you go to any of these sites, and look at the html source, you will see that I coded the location of the clientraw.txt file using http://preussweb.com/wdisplay/weather/clientraw.txt
Now, if I use address “B” or “C”, WDLive works ok (on my work PC… That’s another story). But if I use “A”, I get “Configuring”, long delay, and then a “Serial Number Error” (on the “trial” copy). However, normally, I never use address format “A”.
:?: My question, Julian, is "What address should I give you when I register WDLive. I would guess “http://preussweb.com”. Is that correct :?:
:?: Also, will that work when the page is accessed from address C, using the subdomain “weather.preussweb.com” :?:
Very good question and one that may throw light on another problem.
The actual domain only matters for the serial number as that is what the serial number encodes. So if you’re domain is mywebsite.com and that is the encoded number in the xml file then all is well. However if you’re trying to call from a sub-domain - www.mywebsite.com - then the number will be incorrect and you’ll get the error.
This can be complicated when you own a domain but you’re hosting company uses a frame set at 100% to actually mask the real domain. eg. Your domain might be mywebsite.com and this appears in the address bar of the browser but the page is really mycheapisp.com/fred/bloggs. In this case the serial number must be for mycheapisp.com.
What is interesting to me though is the situation in A where, to my thinking, you shouldn’t be getting that serial number error. I’ll think about that a bit more.
Julian
When I acces my web page via the subdomain, and then bring up the WDLive page in a frame, the domain is the private url with the full path, i.e. “preussweb.com/wdisplay/wdlive.htm” (That’s what shows in the properties dialog box) so that may be the trick.
That’s why I gave you all the links. Who is better to try them out that you. I will be gone this weekend till Saturday night because I will be doing Lord Baden Powell’s thing. “Back to Gillwell…” :lol:
This will be a good test of the theory! If it doesn’t work we can always try a different number for one of your other domains but confidence is high!
Have a good weekend.

I believe the address to register is http://preussweb.com/ or http://www.preussweb.com/
Both addresses point to 209.202.240.100. The only thing to remember is to have all links and references point to the address you send when registering. If you have the links on your web page using the www then I would think the address to use would be http://www.preussweb.com/
I have most links on my web page set without the www. It doesn't matter if I forget and enter the www because the domain sever disregards the www.
However, I found out that the WD Live serial number is unforgiving. I am so use to typing the www I would enter it from habit. Now that I am aware of the pitfalls of entering the www I enter it less often. :lol:
Just discovered why option A won’t work, to quote from Macromedia -
For security reasons, a Macromedia Flash movie playing in a web browser is not allowed to access data that resides outside the exact web domain from which the SWF originated.
This means that the swf file, the clientraw.txt file and the wdlconfig.xml file must all be in the same domain.
That should explain some problems people have been having.
Julian
CaptDilli,
I agree, I am going to register “preussweb.com”. All the links in my web page are relative, and as I mouse over them, they show as absolute from “preussweb.com/…” in the bar at the bottom of the screen, even if I come in from the subdomain. This is because the subdomain accesses the actual domain through a frame set at 100% and changes to my true address. So the browser thinks it is now at my true url even though the frame is still displaying the subdomain in the address window. Whatever… Julian thinks it will work and there is only one way to find out.
I have just got the live display working after a few initial problems, I really like it and I’d now like to register it.
However, due to the way its working I’m not sure what web address to use and/or if it’ll even work the way I am using it.
The address of the live weather page is on is -
http://www.homeinscotland.dns2go.com/liveweather.html
This is on a server that does not have a fixed IP address, hence the DNS2GO service address.
I found when setting up live weather that it would only work when I put in the IP address of the server and not the web address above, ie
src="wdlv1_03.swf?http://81.104.111.222:8080/clientraw.txt
worked but neither of these worked …
src="wdlv1_03.swf?http://homeinscotland.dns2go.com/clientraw.txt
or
src="wdlv1_03.swf?http://www.homeinscotland.dns2go.com/clientraw.txt
The latter two give can’t load config errors.
I realise that when my IP address changes I have to edit the config to keep it working but since it tends to stay the same for more than 6 months at a time I’m not unduly bothered about it.
With an IP address inserted in the trial version it works, with a website address it doesn’t, so my question is how do I register it since it seems registration requires a web address?
Any advice welcomed
Donald
Hmm. Yes I can see the problem. I can certainly give you a serial number based upon the IP address and that will work fine - as long as it doesn’t change. I notice you’re using port 8080 rather than the standard port80 - is that a requirement of dns2go?
Personally I use DynDns (http://www.dyndns.org) who seem OK and thus avoid this problem.

Hi Julian,
Thanks for your quick reply.

No, DNS2GO doesn’t require use of port 8080. Its a few years since I set that up and there was a reason for changing it to 8080 (honest) but now you’ve pointed that out I’ve changed it back to 80 and all appears to be working well with the config file edited to have www.homeinscotland.dns2go.com instead of the IP address so you’ll be getting my registration in the next day or so hopefully.
