with recent power failure due to wide area thunderstorm, I have posted query re missing data / log files etc.
I have also found the rainfall data for same period has had a rather strange “addition” to rainfall total for month’.
When power came back on, there was a change in the amount of rainfall for the monthly and yearly value from 10.0 mmm to 14.4 mm, without any rainfall occurring within the time frame
I have a similar problem, manually went through to replace all the incorrect values… now I still have a rain total for the month of 1700mm plus.
Can’t seem to get rid of it… wxsim still things it is 1700mm plus although all values in wxdisplay are correct… weird.
The rainfall correction in WD is a real problem, as I have had a lot of problems in the past and have advised in the WD forums for some time.
There are too many ways that you can “correct” rainfall and none seem to do the job correctly. I have passed these on to Brian over several years, and fear that he has marked me as a serial complainer. but the problems still persist. Another regular problem is the Detailed Rain chart display often loses the rain data and displays ‘—’ in its place, and this cannot be corrected either.
I am a retired BoM observer / tech officer / field station quality control inspector of some 30 years, and hopefully know what I am talking about.
My WD is running on a dedicated intel minicomputer, with NO other programs running, and is up to date with all drivers etc. I run a Davis Vantage Pro 2 system with Davis display feeding into the WD PC.
All I can say is dont hold your breath for a fix in the near future…
I feel you. Your setup is pretty much the same as mine: a dedicated laptop with nothing on it—not even Wasim. I forward all data to WXSIM, which runs on a separate laptop.
I have the impression that WD, and I have been using it for over 20 years now, if not longer, is just “bolted on ad hoc.” This is not to take a stab at Brian, as it is easy to do. It just feels that it is built operationally, not strategically or architecturally sound.
Over the years, I have been “putting up” with rainfall issues, particularly end-of-month, 9 a.m. stuff. But it gets very frustrating at times especially when you want to correct errors. If all data collection is fine then sure WD is working ok, but OH boy if you need to make corrections.
It is now to the point that I am seriously considering ditching WD for something else. I do not mind paying for it. The alternative is just… well, give it all “away”. I was hoping to reach the 30th mark, but there is only so much coffee a man can drink in a day.
But I agree… good luck getting it fixed. I can understand that Brian is a bit “over it” he is been doing it for a long time for “pennies on the dollar”. If he is over it, then … well just set an end date for the app or hand it over to someone who wants it. What I see now is just a slight fading away from the “responsibilities” (for lack of better term).
I know Brian has attempted to fix rainfall issues over the years but the 9am reset has eluded him. I figured out how to correct my data after re-reading Brians advice many times until I achieved the results I was looking for…yes he can be hard to understand at times…but in the end it has always made sense.
CumulusMX4 seems decent. I would not call it a direct replacement for WD. But for simple data collection it has been okay. I wish there were templates available for it to display the data like WD but so far I have not found anything. But if your main objective is reliable data collection it is worth looking into.
