Rain amount in weather display not match amount recorded for lacross 2300

Hi there

Last night, for the first time since I’ve had my weather station and WD set up, we had a good rain event. While the event was registered correctly in both the weather station and WD, the amount registered in WD is less than the weather station. FOr example, my 24 hour reading in the weather station is 19.1 mm whereas it’s 16.4 in WD. Both WD and the weather station have been on continuously. The other day I had a similar case of the station reading 2.1 mm and WD reading 1.5 mm.

There have been similar topics on the subjhect but I couldn’t figure out how I could apply them to this situation. Is it because WD has missed a couple of buckets of rain or is the conversion of buckets to mm different in WD vs the weather station? I have just upgraded WD version 10.18c. Stupidly I didn’t keep a record of the version I was on before (10.17r I believe). BTW is there a document with the changes that go into each release somewhere?

Thanks for your help!
Andrew

At the risk of being shot down…

I have the WS2300 and thought I had the same problem but I’m not certain that there is a proble at all now. Yes there is a difference between the console and WD but I believe this is due in part to the different reset times between the console and WD.

My month figures are nearly the same and my last hour figures are exactly matching. I find it is usually the last 24 hours that have a mismatch due to one resetting at midnight and the other at 09:00

I’m going to re-assess the situation in a couple of months or so

Cheers

Thanks Graham

I’ve actually seen cases where the last hour and the last 24 hours (when I visually adjust for the 24 period differences) still have differences. For example, right now WD tells me that 15.9 mm has fallen since 24 hours ago but the station tells me 20.2mm has fallen. I’ve seen similar difference in the one hour totals but I’ve tried to ignore those because as other posts have mentioned, it seems to a take a little while for WD to update.

I’ve had the same problem on and off over the last couple months. Brian has been looking into it.
He has added another option for the WS-2310 rain gauge - he told me to try this to see if it helps.

Under “weather station type and station settings” - next to where you tick "LaCrossee WS2310 there is a box you can tick that says “I am using a modified rain gauge”

I just got home after some very light rain today. I’m going out now to check my manual gauge against my WS gauge and WD (also have a Davis gauge running).
I’ll post back with my results after I check it all out.

Ok - checked everything out.
All guages read the same at .10"

i have made some changed since the version you were using andrew, and you should find 10.18c is better

Great! I have 10.18c installed and recording and there seems to be rain on the way for me to test. Thanks for your swift replies!

Hi again

My station/WS set up had been recording perfectly for a couple of months but recently I’ve noticed that it’s missing rain again - yesterday the station recorded 4.1 mm and WS showed 3.6mm. Last week I had a 16mm vs 8mm difference. I wonder if this was due to an upgrade I did recently (I was on 10.18c and I moved to the 10.20 build) - could a setting have been reset on the upgrade?

Thanks
Andrew

I have found a similar problem and for me it is because WD first takes the rain amount in inches and converts it to mm and saves it with no more than 1 dec place. It then converts it back to inches to display rounding again and it is this double conversion which causes the problem because WD does not use two or more decimal places. Try the maths for your self rounding each time to integer values for mm and you will probably find the discrepancy.

I think Brian needs to use 3 dec places for mm and then the conversion works pretty well.

with the ws2310, I did Increase the allow rain amount threshold in a version a month or 2 ago…that should help wd missing any rain tips…but the problem might also be when the ws2310 sends the rain amount everyone now and then non standard (i.e the amount it goes up by changes)

WD stores its rain as mm,and to high resolution, but if inches set to display, then it converts to that…but that has no affect on the stored amount…

Brian,

I am running WD 10.20r now, seems very stable and I am happy with it’s performance.

However prior to this version change I was running “g” I believe and I noted some anomalies with rain readings from my La crosse 2310 as well.

Should I set the Station Type with “using a modified rain guage” or not?

Thanks,
Bob
