my setup does not have the "/ " at the beginning of the remote directory so you could try just “public_html” in that box
use a ftp client without any remote folders configured and see where you land.
this should give you some clues

I think you had the right answer,
When you setup an ftp account in cpanel, you need to setup a path to the “public_html” folder with that account,
so you don’t need to put anything in the “remote directory” box in wd
that is what i thought. I went through a similar problem when I first used a hosting service.
It appears that your site is updating as it should
