Questions about moving WD from c:\program files on Vista

Ok, need to move WD permanently from c:\program files\wdisplay\ to C:\wdisplay\ on a Vista machine.

I understand I need to put 2wd.txt in the c:\wdisplay folder and move all folders over.

But how will WD find the correct entries in the windows registry. Do I need to do anything regarding that? I’m assuming doing the WD registry backup and restore is not needed in this circumstance.

All settings will be moved across intact correct?
Will I still need to set WD to run as administrator?
Will I still need to set WD to Windows Xp sevice pack 2 compatibily mode?
After the move, can I simply delete the c:\program files\wdisplay folder?

Thanks, trying to make this painless as I’m doing this via remote log in.

I would:

A: close existing WD
B: create C:\wdisplay
C: create wd2.txt file and place it in folder
D: Copy all contents of existing WD to new directiry
E: Install a New WD to that Folder like an Upgrade
F: Launch new and see where you are at.

You may need to change some paths for file saving not sure. Don’t delete original until you are sure new is 100%

Untested by me but would be how I would attempt it…

why create the 2wd.txt file (which means starting with no settings)
just install wd to c:\wdisplay and then also copy the wdisplay.ini to there too from c:\programn files location
and then when you run it, reset any directory locations to that new location
e.g data files and logfiles and web files and clientraw locations

Thanks guys. It’s Vista, it irritates me, what can I say.
I had in my muddled head that the 2wd.txt was needed to keep the two installs from interfering with each other.

Appreciate the answers.

Why do you want to move the directory?

Just taking a guess here but a few folks have found that VISTA is too restrictive for WD when running in C:\Program Files and installing as C:\WeatherDisplay or C:\WDisplay allows it to run smoother on VISTA…

Yep, exactly as Bob said, and that’s what I had found. Sometimes WD would run fine for several days, then start doing odd things like shutting down for no reason. Time will tell if it is indeed happier in the C:\wdisplay folder where it is now.

It did get rid of the Run as Admin password prompt after the move.

For future referance, here’s how the move was accomplished.

A-Shut down all WD and associated programs. Switched to Admin Account.
B-Created the folder c:\wdisplay
C-Did a full install of the latest version of WD into c:\wdisplay.
D-Moved the wdisplay.ini file from c:\program files\wdisplay to c:\wdisplay.
E-Copied the folders databackup, Webfiles, DataFiles and logfiles from old to new folder.
F-Fired up WD from the new location.

Almost everything was correct and working. I was missing the FTP settings and Main Screen customizations. Brian said WD should have read the registry entrys, where those are stored, but at his direction, I had to open up the old install WD, do a backup of the Registry entries, copy that file over to c:\wdisplay. Double clicked that file, it loaded the entries back into the resgistry.

Opened WD once again, and all was golden!
Emailed Brian for a new registration code, entered it, and was off and running.

Hope things are smoother for you in the new location…
