Anyone using a GridConnect/Lantronix NET232-DTE serial/ethernet adapter to read data from a LaCross ws-2310/2315/2308 weather station? I’m having problems getting Heavy Weather and fetch2300 to communicate with the weather station. Is there some configuration change and/or cable change to make this work?
Hello Karlk,
I have bought the same setup a 2300 and a gridconnect net232 device. Did you finally get it working? I’m amazed about the amount of settings I can configure when going to the Configure webpage for the net232 page.
Can you help me out? Or did you finally bought a ethernet to serial from another Vendor?
Best Regards Tom from the Netherlands
the 2315 type station uses alot of fast DTR/RTS signals ,to wake up the station, i.e it is not normal serial type transmission , and so i am not surprised it has trouble over a ethernet connection
usb to serial has trouble with the 2315 type station, unless its good quality usb to serial
the 3600 station is even worse for this issue
Hello Windy,
I also read in soe forums that it uses DTS signals, but I’m unable to find a DTS signal and I think DTS is not used by La Crosse. Can you confirm that it does work? The combination of lacrosse 2315 with a Gridconnect net232 serial-to-ethernet box? I will need to cover 600 Km over the internet…
I have read alot about Problems, but I haven’t found a message saying this combination isn’t working. It appears that Karlk has the same setup so I’m very curious if he has got it working!
@Karlk123 , Does you combination work?
@Windy , you are mentioning that the 3600 is even getting worse, do you have more information about the difference between 2315 and 3600?
Best Regards, Tom
(Getting bit desparate, I have ordered the Gridconnect net232 in the US, costs me a lot of money to ship it to Netherlands, and now it looks like I will never get it working, I hop
Hi,
I have not been able to get the GridConnect net232 to talk with the WS-2310. I tried two of them back to back without success. Some things that I found out:
- the ws-2310 is wired for only TX, RX, RTS, and DTR. It appears that the RTS and DTR lines are mostly held low and high. Some think they move, others say they’re fixed for power reasons.
- the net232 is wired for TX, RX, DCD, RTS, and CTS.
- the ws-2315 serial cable does not map directly to the net232 lines
I tried a few combinations of forcing the ws-2310 RTS and DTR lines to specific levels but it did not help. I am worried that as most have said that the LaCrosse rs232 protocols are so quirky that it may not work at all. The only other info I found was that someone had successfully got the net232 and others Ethernet/RS232 adapters to work on other non-LaCrosse weather stations.
Regards,
Karl
i was probably wrong about the DTS…i was just going on memory
Hello All on Friday 13th…
I brought some Serial stuff with me from work, bob a few gender and null modem changers. A borrowed weather station 2300. Trying to perform some stuff, i discovered that placing a perm -V (It’s a Pin in the BOB) on pin 20 of the WS-2300 is enough for letting it to starttransmitting data to the Computer! So it doesn’t need a connection to the net232. So I only have BOB pins 2,3,4 enabled from the DB25 Pinned BOB, and a -v on Pin 20 at the WS2300 side.
The biggest trouble I have right now is the Speed it all operates. I have found nothing on the “quirky” LaCrosse serial protocal about speed, parity and stop bits… Most time 9600 8N1 is good.
@Karlk, do you know anything about the speed it should operate?
@Karlk, do you recall which Weather Station brands do operate with the NET232?
Best Regards Tom from the Netherlands
The Davis VP will work with ethernet/serial boxes. I have done it with a Comtrol box and others on here have done it with other brands. The Davis uses two way serial communication, the PC/software prompts it to send data. I imagine the Oregon Scientific WMR 928/968 will also work since that has a regular serial interface. So far as I know the WMR just continually sends out data without any prompt/handshake from the PC/software.
Jippie, allmost there, need a few more answers!
I performed following:
- Placed a serial Break Box between WS2300 and PC Com1 for reference
- Checked the lights and find out the least nessesary pins
- I first got 4 pins, TD RD DTR RTS all on the left side of the Breakout box (Left side is the DTE Side where the PC on Com1 is connected, on the right side the DCE part is connected to a laCrosse 2300 Weather Station)
- When the La Crosse is in action with the Heavy Weather software RTS is solid red (when no software is running it is green)
- DTR is allway’s green
When trying to perform this with the NET232 Virtual Com4 to the same pc i didn’t get the green light on RTS and the green light on DTR Tried several Baudrates etc.
End solution is as follows Took me 5 hours (not counted the other day’s I was searching) :
- place the LaCrosse 2300 at the DCE side of the Break out box (Right Side)
- place the net232 on the left DTE side of the break out box
- On the break out box I only enabled allowed jumper 2 and 3 (Td and Rd)
- On the right (DCE / LaCrosse WS2300) side I placed to wires:
– 1 from the +V to pin 4 of the BreakOutBox
– 1 from the -V to pin 20 of the BreakOutBox - Now I place the NET232 in 2400 Baud 8N1 NO Flow controll what so ever no adjustable pins etc
That’s it it run’s!
Now the problem, I want to have this setup running without the BreakOutBox I came accross a forum which said the LaCRosse uses a bit of power from the serial connection to work. This power should now come from the NET232…
Can Someone explain what I did? With those +v en -V , are those stable straight volts ? or is a a Clock signal of some kind? I Included a Picture so you can see the setup, JPG compression is a Bit low because of the limit for file posting.
I Hope someone can tell me how to trick the Serial connection without using the Break Out Box, the break out box I’m using has power for itself with a battery.
Thanks everybody for the advise so far!
Regards Tom, going to an angry Wife in the middle of the night…
Hello ,
I have the working solution:
The WS2300 use the RTS DTR as power supply for his RS232 driver circuits, so you need to provide those voltage.
I have a Lantronix UDS-10 RS232 to Ethernet adapter, called terminal server.
It is working nicely. A little modification is needed to get correct voltages.
If anybody is interesting, I can give the exact cabling / modification…
HI, i m a new user for this device and having a issue that when i power on this device both LED on ethernet blinking and am unable to connect it to serial port and via web page, although i am getting a ping response of the ip that i have assigned to the device. appreciate if some one can help me on it… as I haven’t received any feedback from GRID CONNET yet on said issue.
