I believe a Trojan Horse got into our PC while WD was running. AVG froze up when trying to put it in the Vault. On rebooting, I noticed that WD didn’t start up like normal when booting into XP. I tried manually starting it up and got “Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.” I also see that the WE.exe has turned to a generic icon. I restored XP to an earlier point with no success. I don’t want any of my WD settings trashed, as I used WD’s built in Web creator for my website (www.goosebayweather.com). Am I going to be able to get out of this unscathed, or will I, in the least, have to reinstall WD? If so, how can I copy over whatever files are needed to get back to my original setup?
We.exe ?
do you not mean WeatherD.exe ?
do you have WD settings and data backed up?
(e.g using the built in databackup)
to an external source even?
Yes, I mean WD. I haven’t backed it up for quite some time. In fact, I think I reformatted the external drive when returning for the summer, thinking I would back up soon.
I do have access to WD entire folder. Can I manually copy those over? When copying just a bit ago, my PC would not allow me to copy the WD.exe file. Strange. So can I make due with what I have?
I just ran Karen’s Replicator and I believe it backed everything up onto my external drive. I checked the latest log file and it’s last log is stamped for today at 4:50 p.m. AST. So, I think I have it all backed up. I ran the WD installer that I downloaded the other day. Tried to start up WD- the extractor window came up briefly and then quit. I then tried again and got the same “Windows cannot access…”
I just checked the properties of WeatherD.exe. The date created isMarch 5, 2009. Modified is Thursday, Sept. 15 (tomorrow!) and Accessed today. I can’t delete it as I am being told "Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. I downloaded the zip file of WeatherD.exe, and replaced the original. Now the modification date is for today. The created date is still March 5. And WD will still not start up.
I suspect the virus has stuffed windows up
you will probably have to re install windows I suspect or similar
I may go ahead and reinstall Windows. If I have a legit backup, how might I restore WD to what I had just a couple of hours ago?
there is a FAQ on how to transfer WD to a new pc
the same will apply
Got a clean install of XP done and bringing WD over to the new install worked without a hitch. Now I need to troubleshoot this crazy “network cable unplugged” issue. Can’t get online for my weather data. Bummer.
Got a network connection going now. But I don’t see any of my internet actions on at all. Everything is off in the Advanced Internet Settings. No Weather Station File Name in Web Files/Web Page Setup, etc. Am I going to have to create this all over again? There mud be all that saved in my folder I copied over.
Csonni,
Did you run the wdisplayftp.reg ?
Also some trouble shooting hints in this FAQ
-Bob
Yes, I did. Although, because I couldn’t start WD up, I couldn’t do the Actions-Back Up Registry before the whole process. I ran the wdisplayftp.reg that was there in the folder already. Should I double click that file again?
I’m wondering now if I should go through all the steps of recreating my website in WD.
if the wdisplayftp.reg file was from a recent back up, then double clicking on that will load the internet settings from that backup
if things settings have changed since that back was done then you will need to make those same changes again
looks I’m going to have to reset all those settings. I think I’ll have to go back to my thread I started in Sept. 5, 2010 and glean as much as I can from there to set everything up again. Shouldn’t be too hard?
Been trying to get my website back to being updated. I’ve been trying to trace back my footsteps from this thread out started last year: WD Web Site
Can’t seem to get anything to update. Not sure what switches should be on or off in all my WD settings. Is there something I need to do on my server, since I’ve been down since Sept. 14? I don’t see the icon down in the task bar telling me that any uploading is taking place like before.
Lift off again! I had my password set wrong.
