I’ve been through the FAQs and searched but forgive me if this is answered elsewhere.
I have WD running on Vista with a OS WMR928. Just bought a David VP2 with USB data logger.
I’ve been reading through the various nightmares with the VP2 & USB data logger but the plan is to set up the VP2 on the existing PC and simply change the station settings within WD.
The question is, do I have to install the supplied WeatherLink (5.9?) s/w that will come with the VP2 just to get it running with WD? I’d rather not - prefer to simply plug it in to the USB port, after disconnecting the 928.
Just a bit concerned with all the VP2 USB problems, drivers, USB Express etc etc posts out there and don’t want to complicate things if I don’t have to install WeatherLink.
Otherwise, I’ll install it on my Mac Mini I guess and buy WD for Mac, if it supports all the Windows features.
You have to install Weatherlink to get the USB drivers installed and find the COM port that the VP2 is installed on.
Once you have this then there’s no need to use Weatherlink and you can either leave it installed as a backup to WD or just uninstall it.
The USB problems with the VP2 are nothing to do with Windows, Weatherlink or WD. It’s to do with local radio interferrence that effects the USB cable between the console and the PC. Adding a couple of ferrite chokes to the cable or upgrading from the supplied USB cable to a thicker one with ferrite chokes should cure the problem, if you experience it in the first place.
Install WeatherLink to get the COM port (leaving it in Serial mode instead of USB even though it’s a USB DataLogger).
Re-configure WD to say it’s now a VP2
Download the FTDI serial port driver from www.ftdichip.com for the Mac Mini for the OS 928 serial->USB converter drivers
Download and configure WD for the Mac. (Still need to buy/register the Mac version)
Interesting to see the difference in readings from the 928 to the VP2 in the same location. All works now (apart from FTP uploads from the Mac WD, but haven’t spent much time on that)
