New Version of WD REQUIRES Edge?

13th Janurary 2023 10.37S Build 146: .zip Update: New compiler version, requires new Edge browser (should auto install the run time for that if not found). Runs 10% faster. Added support for Ecowitt camera.

Anybody know what it means when it says “requires Edge browser”? Why does WD require a specific browser? Or is this just for visitors to our sites? I’m not certain but I don’t think Edge is available on my iMac M1 machine.

This could cause issues if anyone still runs on very old Windows, I have installed it on my W7 PC a while ago, and in fact on Linux, to test it but don’t actually use it on either. No idea if it works on older Windows versions.

I assume it means that it uses Edge components to do certain things, e.g. download files from web sites. Whilst not actually browsing the functionality required to download a page is the same for browsing so software often uses components that it would expect to find on the PC to do that job. The older versions probably do the same thing but as IE has now been removed WD can’t use the IE functions, so it has to use something else and that happens to be Edge. Not sure what happens on Mac…the code probably uses Safari components instead. For Win7 then I guess this is another nail in the coffin of an obsolete OS.

It works fine on Windows 7 I just don’t use it, never have used any Microsoft browsers.

WD is probably using IE components in the background without you realising. If those components have now been withdrawn by MS then I assume you’ll need to install Edge for the relevant WD functions to work.

I don’t think WD runs on XP now, let alone Edge. Seem to remember 10.37S build 128 was probably the last version to work on XP?

I tested this new version for Brian. It does not require Edge, only certain Edge runtime components. It has an automagical installer to get them if you don’t have them. The older IE runtime stuff is now depricated and no longer available or useful. The particular item Brian had me look at were the NOAA reports and graphs.

Jim

I installed the new version of WD on my Windows server 2019 that does not have Edge installed on it and I get an error at WD startup. See attached.
I’d rather not install Edge on my server, and it seems the automagical installer did not work. Is there a link to the Edge runtime components that I can install myself or some other workaround for this issue?

Try running as administrator. There is also a file in the wdisplay directory MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup - you could try running that. You may need to run as Administrator too.

Good luck,

Jim

Thanks Jim, running the file manually worked.

I had to move WD to a different computer when I had a drive failure.
I was able to install WD on an old laptop, and fortunately had all my weather backed up on a NAS.
It didn’t take long to get back up and running, though there were a few tweaks needed, such as com port for the data logger.

One issue I have not been able to overcome is an error message when WD starts. If I OK through it 3 times, WD then starts working. I have run MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup as administrator and it says it was successful. However, I still get the error message and I have to OK through it 3 times.

I have done a search and the _x86.dll version is not on the drive.
Suggestions, as while this doesn’t keep WD from running, it will prevent it automatically restarting if the system reboots due to MS updates, etc.

Running Windows 10 Pro

You might have to ask Brian about this by e-mail.

I just tried moving WD to a new old-computer with Windows 7. I tried running MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup and get Unknown Installer error. This was the latest version downloaded today. I see people are using Windows 7 these days. The old PC i’ve been using has XP and works fine. If this is a Win 7 issue, is there a build i can go back to? Note that many people use their old computers with old operating systems to host WD, so upgrading windows is not an option.

I have no idea if you can run MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup on Windows 7. Can you not ignore “Unknown Installer” and “Install anyway”?

I note that build 152 is labelled “for Windows XP (with latest updates)” but I don’t think that’s true. I seem to recall that 10.37S120 was the last version to run successfully on XP.

BTW you can’t expect Brian to make sure that every change he makes to WD will run on XP. . . I doubt if his compiler is capable of that.

Thanks for the reply. It says “Unknown Installer Error” when I click “OK” it doesn’t continue to install, it aborts.

My old XP computer has run WD for years, it is build 10.37S130. That computer is making weird noises so I’m moving WD to a laptop with Windows 7. So if there’s an old version stable with Windows 7, that would be great.

Edit: I just tried build 131, I don’t get that error. So I think I’m good…
