Need CarterLake Step by Step

Hi Group,

I am coming from VWS and wanted to try WD, I installed the program and have it talking with my DavisVPro,
now let me tell you this program has way more buttons than VWS, so I am a lot confused, how do I get
the ajax templates installed and running?..I run my own on site XP webserver, so I would like to get fast update times, also get the 5 day forecast from the advanced.php script. I also run a Homeseer server and need the csv log files updated more offend if possible. I also would like to send data to weatherunderground
every 5 min.

Also I was using imagesalsa, can I use it with WD or just use the built in capture. What would be the best
way to set things up?

Screen shots would be great. I know this a lot to ask me being new and everything but I am starting to get discouraged and I have a long way to go.

thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum.

Yup lots of buttons, but that is what makes it so exciting and infinitely configurable.

I have been running WD for what seems ages now, but so far haven’t tried to use the Carter Lake AJAX templates. The experts will lead you along on that particular theme.

As far as uploads to Wunderground go WD has all the means to do it both for Data and the Webcam side of things (data intervals are configurable too)

The WebcamCapture programme included with WD is very powerful too and again is very configurable to your needs.

There are many FAQs to be found on the forum and you’ll find plenty of threads to read where help has been asked for. Get familiar with the Forum search function and obviously fill in as many of your Profile details as possible so that forum members don’t have to ask too many questions of you…ie what is your location?

Regards

ps If it all looks too difficult don’t get discouraged as there are heaps of willing helpers…

Mark,

You may want to first start with making sure your Internet Switch is turned ON, under Control Panel - FTP - Connections

Then under control panel - Weather Underground set that up.

Then next look in the FAQs for downloading a NOAA Forcast, set that up
Then get the Carterlake templates and last I saw they had some step by step instructions.

WD has Lots more then VWS (BTDT) but also has a steeper learning curve but well worth the effort…

The Carter Lake templates do have a step-by-step guide but it is old and incomplete. I would do as best as I could by myself, see what doesn’t work, try to get help here, and when all else fails, bribe/pay Ken True to give you a phone consult

WD is not a perfect program and there are bugs that still exist in the product. It does the basic stuff well but a few of the things don’t work properly but still the best deal out there for most purposes. I still have several open issues after running for 2 months that I am waiting to get resolved and I know there are other things I haven’t even bothered to report yet.

I started to create a spreadsheet indicating what files were generated by what screen(s) as I was overwhelmed. I only got so far before getting most of my problems resolved. It would be nice if there was a single document that provided all the data I was trying to accumulate plus what page in the setup affected what items on what pages.

I consider my site and data at about 95-98% correct at this point pending the various bugs getting worked out.

Best wishes!

Lew

As a complete newbie - I managed to get the carterlake template working at 95% but WD is still a ‘black box’ to me in many respects. It would save a lot of anguish/hours of trial and error if:

a) A list existed of what each file in the WDisplay dir does.
b) A list was provided of each WD display saying what each 'switch does.
c) A simple flow diagram was provided showing the WD ‘process’ from weather station to website.
c) The WD Help Manual/FAQs were pruned to eliminate the internal duplication, updated to reflect the current build and expanded to help newcomers.

But my thanks to those who have helped so far (and will continue to do so I hope :D).

Hello Peter,

We would all have loved that at install time and even later when working through problems. I mentioned that I am still working through issues with WD and in fact I just got a mail from Brian minutes ago regarding correcting one of the issues. In this case it was the daily web cam image being generated even though it was told not to on the view page. Turns out another setup option was creating and uploading the file even though on another screen it was turned off. Brian is going to add a check to see if you said “no” in one place that it wouldn’t generate and upload it on another screen.

I started an Excel list of all of the files and what pages they were used on and was going to work on the next step, i.e. what page/setup created/uploaded them but I got busy before I finished the project.

That’s the problem in the Help Manual/FAQs - good bits, bad bits and ‘what the hell is this about’ bits

I can’t remember what was covered in the manual. I doubt I read the whole thing if at all…I know the list I wanted wasn’t there (or anywhere). I have suggested that Brian list the affected files/pages on the page where you are setting the creation and upload times. Those pages seem to have plenty of blank space to list what the setting affects. I was complaining that my site is generated the daily web cam GIF and uploading it although I have it turned off on the VIEW page. I don’t have a webcam and don’t want to generate and upload the page. I have been trying to put WD on a diet. Only generating pages I want and only uploading ones I want uploaded.

A lot of software ’ floats a description’ whenyou rest the mouse on an icon - this would be the the ideal but is probably a massive task (as you can tell I’m not a programmer)
