My support-computer blocked by?

Very difficult to access https://discourse.weather-watch.com/latest from my home.
No communication possible with 3 different browsers.
Needed to install/use a VPN to access the forum again.

My iPad on the same home-network with the same external IP-address works OK.

No idea how to solve this, other then using the VPN.

Wim

It is very very slow here today as well, I can access but sometimes get timeouts from cloudflare and doing anything is dog slow when I do get on! Just getting on and replying to this took an age!

Stuart

Iā€™ve only been on the forum briefly this morning, but it seemed OK then as it does now. Iā€™ve checked the server metrics and theyā€™re fineā€¦normal load and 75% of memory is free. I donā€™t have any clues/ideas about what might be wrong but Iā€™ll keep an eye on things.

Status of acces to Weather-Watch from my DeskTop (iMac):

With normal ISP internet acces there is no response when using Chrome, FF or Safari

Using a VPN from Belgium(Brussels)-Netherlands(Amsterdam)-Luxembourg there is also no response

Using other VPN locations such as Norway, UK, US I get fast response from the weather-watch website.

Using different locations there is either fast response or no response.

Clearing the cache and forced reload has no effect

Sadly the iPad still seems to work without problems.
But it does not show this answer after a minute.
Even refreshing the page, only the 2d answer (administrator) is shown
It takes over a minute before my answer also shows on the iPad.

Regards,
Wim

Interesting I can access here on Android tablet using kiwi browser but Firefox on same tablet hangs with 5 blue circles pulsating. Iā€™m typing this on kiwi!

Stuart

This isnā€™t an issue at the moment. It was supposed to be happening by the end of 2024 but itā€™s not planned now until some time in 2025. I will need to adjust the cookie policy before then but I need to read up about whatā€™s needed first.

It seems odd that itā€™s affecting you from home but not by VPN to Norway. That suggests some kind of localised issue. The forum itself only discriminates against a small number of countries - not including the Netherlands - and thatā€™s actually done via Cloudflare rather than the forum or forum server. Iā€™ve checked to see if there are any outstanding Cloudflare issues, and particularly any affecting the Netherlands, but thereā€™s nothing being reported that I can see.

I assume that your home connection is still IPv6 based? Do you know how your VPN connection presents itself? As IPv4 or IPv6?

Looking in the Cloudflare firewall, there are no reported blocks for Belgium and just four for The Netherlands today. Two of the Netherlands blocks were for attempting to access Wordpress pages, i.e. hacking attempts, one wasnā€™t blocked but was issued a challenge to confirm it was a human accessing and not an automated system. The final block was a file hotlinking attempt, e.g. an image from the forum being used on another website. This wouldnā€™t be you from a browser though and in any case there was only one instance of this block today.

I managed to see the five blue dots on my phone using Chrome and Firefox. Firefox did eventually clear and then display the forum as normal. Chrome didnā€™t.

I then updated the forum software to the latest version, cleared the Cloudflare cache and cleared my phoneā€™s Chrome browser cache. There was still a delay of about 10-15 seconds with the blue dots, but after that initial delay the forum seems to be responding quickly on my phone.

Iā€™ve restarted the server that the forum runs in to see if that helps. I donā€™t know if it will because Iā€™m still not sure whatā€™s causing this.

when i first open forum on edge i got the five cycling dots after about 30 seconds i refreshed the page and the forum showed up
have just tried the ipad that showed the dots for about a minute before the forum showed

No problems when using a ā€œfarther awayā€ VPNā€™s (Spain, Norway, UK-coventry, a.o)

When using more local acces my ISP, or VPN to Belgium, Netherlands or Luxemburg, I get errors such as 520 524 after a long time with the 5 dots or blanc window.

All pointing to the ā€œorigin webserverā€
No idea what is happening as not all devices run into the same error.
And different browsers also show different behavior.

Below the error screen after a few minutes waiting using the ISP connection
Switching to any ā€œfarther awayā€ using a VPN works OK as I am typing this message from Coventry-UK

Maybe a block for my local-IP + device-MAC address ?

Wim

Iā€™m still having issues with Firefox and Chromium on Linux, usually 5 pulsating blue dots but now this is using Waterfox (new install) on same Linux PC and Iā€™m straight in. Kiwi browser on Android works but Firefox doesnā€™t!

Stuart

I havenā€™t implemented any blocks at that level. I have country blocks in place and there are also general Cloudflare ā€˜bad actorsā€™ blocks in place, but I doubt that your IP would appear on a bad actors list. Youā€™re not the only person affected, including me at times, so I doubt that weā€™ve all inadvertantly been added to a bad actors list.

Iā€™ve just updated and rebooted all the servers so weā€™ll see if that makes a difference.

Well I just got straight in on Firefox (Linux) obviously had to login again but so far so good. Will see how it is in the morning.

Stuart

Thatā€™s a good sign. Hopefully others see a similar improvement.

Iā€™m not sure why rebooting all the servers without help though because the forum only runs on one (fixed server).

This morning I switched the iMac on and, without having to login, could visit weather-watch.com without any delays.

a very :grinning: Wim
