Mac Versions gone??

Anyone know what happened to the mac versions?

After posting this, I came across this announcement:

It’s now about 7 weeks since Brian (author of Weather Display) logged into this forum. I know he’s been active online elsewhere during this time so I assume he’s actively choosing not to log in and particate here. I hope all is OK with him. I can only imagine supporting this product has been a huge stressor to him. I personally feel it should be a paid app. If he comes back I will be the first one to do so.

This is a great app which many of us enjoy and depend on.

Wherever Brian is I wish him well. He has helped me with many tough issues regarding WD.

I am all for paying for this software. The fact he has given it for free this long is amazing. I have been using WD since 2007, so would be VERY difficult to give up or move to something else.

Next to the link on the WD Downloads page it says; “Weather Display for Mac OSX in the Apple Mac Store (code signed and Sandboxed)”
So I’m guessing it’s the Mac version.

THanks didn’t catch that. It says the version is 378.20 - how does that map to the 378 version I have now? Historically, there have been different versions of the same build (i.e. 378 has multiple downloads same version different dates) - does that make sense.

I’ve no idea on that one, unfortunately. Brian has a version history on the WD website for the Windows version but not for Mac. I can only assume 378.20 is the current version but how that differs from the version you have is unknown.
If you’ve got issues with your version, you could try to update and see if it fixes the issues, if not then maybe email Brian directly.

Hi all, so I am a bit confused here. Are mac users now expected to pay for every new version via the App Store, which can be multiple in short periods of time. To Dan’s point, is this a new business model being established across all platforms, or just for mac. Curious to see where this goes.

Agree with D-Dawg, would be tough to walk away from WD after using it for a very long time, with great support from Brian.

I did have a brief email exchange with Brian

Sounds like he is moving off the old model and on to App store. I insinuated that the price will include all updates (will try to confirm).

Also this will be coded signature. Sounds like the new version will not be under documents folder but rather within applications folder like any other app - which probably is good - don’t quote me on this as I didn’t fully understand his msg.

I’m thinking of taking the plunge to outright buy the app and see what happens. I too have donated many times. He needs to make money as he puts in ALOT of time and effort into this.

On the negative side, there is NO documentation on this change, new install process etc. I’m hoping and assuming he is working on that. Hoping the app store version will install it properly

Thanks for the info, Deputy Dawg. I agree the installation via the App store makes it more mac native, good direction to go in. Hope everything else falls into place, can’t say enough good things about the work Brian has done over the years to get the mac version to where it is today.

Hands down he does an amazing job.

I’m tempted to purchase off the app store today. But with no instructions, not sure w hat I will be doing. Sounds like there is alot to do first time All the data in documents has to move to app folder (I THINK)

Got my issue fixed - WOO HOO

Ref the mac version via app store, yes updates are included.

Once you download, you run once and quit (which I assume builds the folders). Then move your Wdisplay folder from documents to this new folder

New folder locations: ~/Library/Containers/com.weather-display.weatherdisplayapp/Data/Documents/

Any folder locations need to be updated in WD - i.e. Metar locations (screen shot)
