Lost all data

Davis VPII w/usb logger, wd 10.37Q Build 78 Computer locked up. Upon reset and starting WD, the start up screen was like the default (black background) and no way like I had it set. Also, I had to settup the com port, baud, etc. All past data is gone. When I view all time records, it reads todays. All publication settings are fine EXCEPT wunderground…I had to put in my station name and password and turn on ‘rapidfire’ and ‘main’. I tried a system restore but the only restore point was last night after the problem occurred.

I did a fresh install of WD last July and in the webfiles I have July2011, August2011, September2011 and October2011 HTML files. When opened all my data is there. So…how do I get my screen to look as I’d customized and how do I get my data back?

I just checked and I do have a file 'wdisplaybackup.ini ’ but it’s dated today. And only has today’s data …temp, etc.

The problem is that WD re-creates the wdisplay.ini file (if not found during boot-up), and, the new routine that does the 10 minute auto-backup of the wdisplay.ini file over-writes what could have been your only rescue.

You need to search your harddrive for an older wdisplay.ini file, or, find a windows restore point before the problem occurred with your system. Otherwise there aren’t many options and you may just have to start from scratch and re-input all the parameters.

FWIW, WD has a backup routine under Control Panel → Data Backup that will perform the backup and even transfer the backup offsite. It is recommended that all WD users enable this very important function.

In the WD program folder is there a folder called “databackup”?
If so, then look in there for a file called “databackup102011.zip” and you should find all you data and a backup of wdisplay.ini that you can use to reload into WD and get all your settings and data back again.

Hard to explain what I’ve done but I found a wdisplay.ini from July (won’t explain why, but in a directory I created called ‘wdisplay1’). I renamed the current one wdisplay1.ini, copied the other one in the folder. Now i have my old screen back and data from July. Anyway, I have the data backup set and after clicking ‘back up now’ I have a backup folder with the ‘databackup102011.zip’ in it.So at least maybe I’ll be ok from another crash. This happened once before and never could find all the old data and Brian just figured it was gone as I didn’t have the backup set.

Thanks for the help!

Good deal. Your historical data should show up, but if it doesn’t let us know…

its always recommended to set the auto daily data back up

also, the wdisplaybackup.ini is created every 10 minutes
but you would need to use that file before it was created from a copy of the new (empty) wdisplay.ini file

I think I’ve got everthing ok. My historical data is ‘someplace’ in limbo, but I can live without it.

If you have new records that have been set since the time you saved that ini file in July you can get WD to re-read the files under the action menu.

NorCal Dan, Thanks! Now my ytd, month and all time records (from july on) are up to date!

How exactely do I do that?
I want my All time records to be up to date for rainrate.
I had a weird value recently and I resetted that record but now it is only showing the record since that day.

Action → Reset Extremes

Scroll to the bottom and there is an “All” button at the bottom of the All-Time column.

Ok, I did not click on that All button but on the button for rain rate and the value changed to 0.
I did this already some time ago but I won’t get the rainrate record since January 1st 2010.
It sets the record from this day on.

Am I missing something here, how can I get WD checking for the rainrate record between 01-01-2010 to this day. #-o

Here’s a similar question on wind gust, and how Brian answered it:

note that the rain rate in the logfile is just the rain recorded for the minute
which is not the same thing as the max instantenous rain rate

The problem is that WD re-creates the wdisplay.ini file (if not found during boot-up)....

This doesn’t seem like a very good idea at all…There really should at least be a prompt giving the user the ability to opt out before it re-creates the file.

I would rather have WD auto-run the backup routine from the Action menu…it makes a backup of the ini files so you can revert back if there is a problem. And better yet, it creates the 2 files in the /backup directory. Would it be better to have it run auto, at least once a day, so that people will have a backup that is at most 24 hours old. What do others think? Is there a downside to running it daily? Maybe every 6 hours? Should there be sequential copies? Keep the past 2 or 3 days or more?

In my case, the power went out long enough to drain my ups and apparently that’s when somehow the ini file was corrupted. I was away when this happened and didn’t get to check wd for a few days, after the fact. That’s when i noticed the screen was different and my graphs weren’t displaying normally. I did have the auto backup running. Maybe i have something configurred incorrectly as i only have one ini backup for the month. That monthly one is backed up very frequently. So, since my last ini was corrupted and wouldn’t work, i guess wd made a new one. That left me with September’s copy of the ini as the most recent and i was able to restore from that one. Rainfall records were screwed up and i manually repaired those.
In my case anyway, a daily ini backup would have been a better option. I am now doing that with a third party solution. Like I said, I probably have something configured incorrectly.
