My SO first mentioned how nice it would be to have a thermometer that
would save minimum and maximum temps.
I started looking and got way carried away. Currently, I’m looking for
a weather station in the $100 to $200 range. Features I’m looking for are:
temp
wind speed (direction would be nice but not that important)
rainfall
not essential:
humidity
baro
PC interface would be nice. I’m not attached to that feature for now,
but I’m leaning that way. I think it would be fun to put my data on the wunderground net if i ever get an always on server set up.
remote sensor wireless or cabled. either would work. I’m lazy, but if
the wireless is that unreliable, I can do a cabled one. (my distance
shouldn’t be more than 40’ on a wood frame house)
The models I’ve looked at online with some of the features I like so far:
Davis Weather Wizard III - $155 (software +$50)
Lacrosse LCT WS2315AL - $175
OS WMR968 - $180
and for a little bit more, $214, i can get the WS3610 with a nice big touchscreen
I’ve been reading up on specs on them
Any observations on brands and features?
thanks

Personally, I would suggest the WMR968.
I have since upgraded to the Davis VP2 (~$400), which is a huge step-up from the WMR968.
Take a look at this thread for more information.
Good luck and don’t be hesitant to ask more questions.

Where are you seeing those Weather Wizard III prices? Just the software/computer interface is usually much more expensive, more like $ 150. Also note that the standard wizard doesn’t include a rain gauge.
I have a Davis station, but between Oregon Scientific and Lacrosse my choice would be Oregon.
I froogled it and found it for $148 now:

but I really want rainfall, so I guess that one is off my list now.

Go for the WMR968 - it’s a great starting weather station for the price.
If you think you’re really going to get serious about the hobby, then I would go for the Davis VP2…if possible, of course.

ok, i’m looking more closely at the wmr968.
does it require a plain old serial cable? 9 pin m-f?
and what software is available for it? i have to consider that in the price.
who is jorick and does his $5 sw work with this model? one ebay seller is bundling it with his unit for a much higher price.

That Davis one looks awfully cheap, even in US dollars.
I’d be going for the OS long before I’d be going for a Lacrosse.
I’ve had a OS WMR-918N, which is a older version, and I was very happy with it, but I did eventually upgrade to a Davis VP2plus, but that’s well outside of your budget.
Plain old 9 pin serial cable.
Weather Display works with it, as well as another package I’m still running.
