Local weather forecasts from UK major providers - how accurate are they?

I have been watching local forecasts for my home area recently and comparing the BBC (Meteogroup) and the UKMO because I have noticed that the BBC seems to be noticeably less accurate than the UKMO. Specifically over estimating either rain or sun compared to actually what is happening on the ground. My other beef with the BBC is with their national TV weather forecasts in that on the map they show temperatures for London but nothing in the Kent/Sussex/Surrey areas, OK they mention ‘lower temperatures near the coast’ but that’s all and I’m sure that this can lead to people assuming here in Thanet the temperature will be about the same and it often is not.

Now I am well aware that we do have an unusual local climate, for example a couple of days ago the forecast on the BBC app was for rain most of the day but the UKMO was suggesting less than 20% chance and in fact we got almost zero rain as 99% missed us but did hit a 20-30 or more miles inland with some quite significant rainfall.

This all leaves me with the impression that at least BBC Local area forecasts are more often far less accurate than the UKMO.

I am wondering what others here in the UK feel about their local area forecasts and which ones seem to be most accurate? Particularly those in coastal areas.

It was a sad day the BBC handed the contract to Meteogroup. . . The Scottish TV forecasts give better detail than the nationals but the BBC Weather web page/app is terrible.

We too have a local climate: I’m only 5 miles south of the Firth of Forth, which itself means Edinburgh often gets “East coast” weather, and the Pentland Hills are immediately to the south.

And, like you, the app showed “Light showers” all day recently - even with < 20% chance - and we got none at all.
